State structures, international forces, and class relations: Theda Skocpol shows how all three combine to explain the origins and accomplishments of social-revolutionary transformations. Social revolutions have been rare but undeniably of enormous importance in modern world history. States and Social Revolutions provides a new frame of reference for analyzing the causes, the conflicts, and the outcomes of such revolutions. It develops a rigorous, comparative historical analysis of three major cases: the French Revolution of 1787 through the early 1800s, the Russian Revolution of 1917 through the 1930s, and the Chinese Revolution of 1911 through the 1960s. Believing that existing theories of revolution, both Marxist and non-Marxist, are inadequate to explain the actual historical patterns of revolutions, Skocpol urges us to adopt fresh perspectives. Above all, she maintains that states conceived as administrative and coercive organizations potentially autonomous from class controls and interests must be made central to explanations of revolutions.

Arsenault Theda Skocpol seeks to explain the causes of social revolution through a structural paradigm. Her level of analysis is the state. This paradigm, holding the state as the level of analysis and concentrating on structure, is defined well by Migdal. "This is a system-dominant perspective in which structuralists see states as interchangeable to the degree that they expect them to act similarly if facing the same array of forces" (215).Skocpol contends that external forces can lead to economic and military instability within a state. This instability weakens both the structure of the state, and subsequently the nation's societal structure. In turn, this creates an environment well-suited for social revolutions. Skocpol defines social revolution as causing two important changes which separate it from other forms of political upheavals: "societal structural change with class upheaval" and "the coincidence of political with social transformation" (5). In order to discover similar phenomena common across states which lead to social revolution, Skocpol uses a method of comparative historical analysis. She seeks to establish relationships between "causal variables referring to the strength and structure of old regime states and the relations of state organizations to class structures" (35). Her analysis spans three revolutions: France 1789, China 1911 and Russia 1917. In looking for commonalities across state boundaries, Skocpol is using what she referred to in Bringing the State Back In as the Toucquevillian approach. In this case, Skocpol is using the Toucquevillian point of view to explore how "state structures and the activities of states" influence social revolution. Skocpol asserts that revolutions emerge from "political crises centered in the structures and situations of old regime states" (47). The author argues that in the cases of France, China and Russia, all regimes faced similar threats which affected state, and consequently, societal structures.According to Skocpol, a number of transnational and internal events can lead to changes in state structure: threats of invasion, defeats in war, political dependency and economic inequalities. In discussing state failure, Migdal writes, "States crack when they are hit simultaneously by three sorts of crises - a state financial emergency, severe elite divisions, and a potential and propensity for popular groups to mobilize" (216). In Skocpol's historical analysis, all three old regimes suffered similar pressures.First, pre-revolutionary regimes could not compete economically with their industrializing neighbors. All three old regimes experienced difficulty making the transition from agrarian economies to industrialized societies. This created economic inequality between states. As Skocpol writes, "Modern social revolutions have happened only in countries situated in disadvantaged positions within international arenas" (23).In addition to economic disequilibrium, all three old regimes encountered military threats from abroad. These regimes were unable to compete militarily with their neighbors due to their economic disadvantage and lack of industrialization. These pressures lead to Migdal's second type of crisis, "state financial emergency."Secondly, in response to these external pressures, the structure of the old regimes weakened, and conflict between the state and elites emerged. The international pressures began to drain the state economically. In France and Germany, wars with industrialized rivals nearly bankrupted the state (65, 81). In China, the Imperial court was unable to counter the intrusion of foreign powers and the successive changes imposed to the economic structure (74). This in turn placed pressure on the elites. In France, the state faced bankruptcy due wars and the lack of an industrialized economy. The state attempted to impose tax reform which would have increased taxation for an elite deeply engrained in the state structure. The elites no longer felt that the state could adequately protect their interests, and began to seek a more representative regime. In turn, this call for more representation weakened the Crown, and coupled with a disillusioned peasant class, was able to change state structure. Similar events in Russia and Manchu China illustrate Migdal's "severe elite divisions."Thirdly, the weakening of the state/elite relationship and divisions in the dominant class were not the sole catalyst for social revolution. Rather, Skocpol argues that in all three revolutions peasant rebellions against landed elites were necessary conditions for successful change in society's structure. In addition, specific organizational structures found in the peasant class were important in providing the revolutionary potential of the peasant (117).Skocpol writes, "Rentier agrarian systems, where small holder peasant families possess and work the land on their own, are notoriously susceptible to peasant revolts" (117). Peasants under such a system find themselves economically tied together against landlords. In other words, the peasants suffer collectively under the yoke of the land holding class. As such, the peasants develop "some organized capacity for collective action against their exploitative superiors" (115).The author uses the example of Russian obshchina as an organizational structure that provides a means to collective action and ensuing peasant revolution. The obshchina was a communal village which administered commonly held lands and disseminated the right to use among the villagers. In turn, the members of the obshchina were "collectively responsible for payment and labor obligations to service-nobles who possessed nearly exclusive jurisdiction over them" (128). Because of the closely knit relationships and responsibilities of peasants in the obshchina, the structure was conducive to collective action. Similar organizational structures of the peasant classes in France and Manchu China illustrate Migdal's "potential and propensity for popular groups to mobilize."

A pioneering work for political sociology By A Customer A new way of studying political sociology was first initiated when Skocpol's "States and Social Revolutions: A Comparative Analysis of France, Russia and China" was published in the 1970s.Skocpol's discussion in the book is based on Marxist class struggle revolution, combined with the consensus theories which explain revolution as response to disequilibum of social system. In the very beginning, Skocpol attended on a fundamental question on most revolutions happened in old-regimes: Why revolution occurred in predominantly agrarian countries? (refer to "Old-Regime State in Crisis") He clearly stated a logical development from the three cases. Revolutionary crises developed when the old-regime states became unable to meet the challenges of evolving international situations. Disintegration of centralized administrative and military machinaries had therefore provided the sole unified bulwark of social and political order. Skocpol concluded that in most cases the pre-revolution states were fully established imperial states. They had a proto-bureaucratic: some officers, especially at higher levels, were functionally specialized. State not in a position to control directly over local agrarian socioeconomic relationship. Before social revolutions could occur, the administrative and military power of these states had to break down. Finally, the old regimes to their downfall were not due to internal conditions alone. Intensifying military competition with nation-state abroad that possessed relatively much greater and more flexible power based on economic breakthroughs to capitalist industrialization or agriculture and commerce. Success in meeting this foreign competition depended on the ability of the monarchy suddenly to mobilize extraordinary resources from the society and to implement in the process reforms requiring structural transformations. France, Russia and China did mobilize to meet foreign competition in the nineteenth century, but avoiding social-revolutionary transformations. It preserve a way to address a deeper analysis on the role of peasantry in the revolutions (refer to "Agrarian Structures and Peasant Insurrections"). Peasant revolts or mobilization for guerrilla warfare played a pivotal role in each revolutionary process. In agrarian countries where peasants are the major producing class. From Skocpol's point of view, without peasant revolts, urban radicalism in predominantly agrarian countries has not in the end been able to accomplish socio-revolutionary transformations. Peasant revolts against landlords were a necessary ingredient in France, Russia and China revolutions, whereas successful revolts by urban workers were not. According to Skocpol, the revolts weakened mainstays of the socioeconomic and political orders of the old regime. Together the extensiveness and anti-landlord focus of the revolutionary peasant revolts created decisive constraints at the societal level on the range of sociopolitical options available to elite contending for national power. Peasants participated in these revolutions without being converted to radical visions of a desired new national society, and without becoming a nationally organized class-for-themselves. Instead, Skocpol thought that they struggled for concrete goals-typically involving access to more land, or freedom from claims on their surplus. Political and cultural marginality and relative socioeconomic immobility, bears the burden of varying combination of taxes, rents, usurious interest rates, and discriminatory prices, peasants always have grounds for rebellion against landlords, states agents, and merchants who exploit them.Skocpol then exploited the transformation process of the peasantry from local levels into a collective force capable of striking out against its oppressors by answering first, the relation of peasantry to the field of power which surrounds it, and second, class structure. For the first question, Skocpol did a great job by analyzing the degrees and kinds of solidarity of peasant communities, the degrees of peasant autonomy from direct day-to-day supervision and control by landlords and their agents, and finally the relaxation of state coercive sanctions against peasants revolts. He answered the second question from the view point of relations of direct producer to one another, to their tools and to the land in the immediate process of production, and relations by which an unpaid-for part of the product is extracted from the direct producers by a class of non-producers.In the last part of the book, Skocpol asked what would be followed the revolution. (refer to "What Changed and How: A Focus on State Building") He answered this with flying color as well. He provided his idea with couple elements. First, the changes after revolution. According to Skocpol, the pre-revolutionary landed upper class was no longer exclusively privileged in society and politics. Second, new authority and emergent political leaderships were challenged by disunity and counterrevolutionary attempts at home, and by military invasions from abroad, to build new state organizations to consolidate the revolutions. Third, Skocpol pointed out that peasant and urban worker were more directly incorporated into national politics and state-run project after the revolution. Forth, Skocpol believed that new state leadership acted as state builders rather than as representatives of classes. Fifth, the old-regime states had once broken apart, fundamental political and class conflicts were set in motion, not to be resolved until new administrative and military organizations were consolidated in the place of the old. Revolts from below directly attacked the property and privileges of dominant classes, thus accomplishing changes in class relations. Last but not least, political ideologies probably functions nothing, but served the political reality and aim of leaders.I apologize for focusing too much on the contents of the book. However, why I do it is because we can understand his contribution only if we go deeply into his ideas. Skocpol did a great job here. I gain a lot from reading "States and Social Revolutions: A Comparative Analysis of France, Russia and China". The book is a must for both politics and sociology students, or those have interest in the field.

Logical Fallacies & the Problem of Mid-Level Theory By A Customer Four the past several weeks, I have been attempting to obtain copies of reviews of States & Social Revolutions that would have been written at the time of the book's initial publication. In fact, I had hoped that I could find whole books dedicated to rebutting much of the flawed argument that Skocpol puts forth in this book. I could find neither. But first, let me state my case against Skocpol.First, there exists the problem of mid-level political theory. There is deep level theory, mid level theory, and what I deem specific political commentary. In deep level theory, one can make certain broad, rather common arguments: when states come under external military pressure, it impacts their economy. On the specific level, one could comment on how a specific war impacted a specific economy. But in the mid level, the arguments become tenuous. This happens when a scholar attempts to take a handful of countries, and to claim that a rather specific series of events (X, Y, Z) impacted those countries, took place in those countries, and had the same results in those countries. This is mid-level theory (in my understanding), and it is often highly flawed.Skocpol advances three test cases to "prove" her argument. Indeed, she writes as though her book is empirically proving a mathematical equation to be true. This is one of the more superficial (though irritating) aspects of the book. Notwithstanding her penchant for a heavy-handed egotistical tone of writing, her argument is still tenuous. Her three test cases are France, Russia, and China. Essentially, Skocpol argues that all of these countries were impacted by their international situation and/or conflict. In France, the external actor was Britain's military might and the situation was exacerbated by France's poor geographic position. In Russia, the actor was WWI. In China, the Sino-Japanese war. These external situations necessitated governmental reforms in all three nations; reforms that would allow the nation to deal with threatening international conditions. Such reforms would deal with agricultural production, taxation, gathering of a military, etc. According to Skocpol, one of the key causes of a social revolution is that the elite classes in the countries where the revolution occurs will be antagonistic to the government's attempts at reform. When this antagonism reaches a hilt, social cohesion and coercion mechanisms fail, and the peasants revolt. The first aspect of Sxocpol's argument is a sound one. In all three cases, there was international pressure and the government attempted reforms. As the argument progresses, it becomes quite weak. In France, the nobility were - as Skopol's claim requires - antagonistic to government efforts for reform, this did result in a breakdown in social cohesion and in coercion mechanisms. In China, the same held true. In Russia, however, the government reforms were accepted by the nobility. (STRIKE ONE).According to Skocpol's logic, a rejection of governmental reforms by the nobility should result in a social revolution. In France, this happened. In Russia, there was no rejection by the noble class, but a revolution too place nonetheless. (STRIKE TWO). In China, there was no peasant revolt, yet Skocpol uses China as a case to prove her argument. (STRIKE THREE).The argumentation in the book is poor. France is Skocpol's best case. But furthermore, it is instructive to note that Skocpol focuses exclusively on states, classes, governments---- but never on individual people. Her model is a very deterministic one: If conditions X, Y, and Z are present, there will be a social revolution. This is poor logic. She excludes any social/cultural factors that may have led to revolutions in any of her test cases. A great example is the case of Russia. Skocpol ignores Czar Nicholas' personal incompetence, and the difference between his ruling style and that of his predecessors. Furthermore, she ignores Russia's rapid industrialization and the power of a growing working class culture/shared identity/etc.I reccomend this book to everyone interested in politics, if only because it will give you some good historical grounding for the periods and cases studied, and because it is always fun to deconstruct the "standard work".

By David Reddick Pete's done a wonderful job of assembling stories on each of the 364 Hoosiers who have played major league baseball. What a tremendous undertaking on his part! This is not one of those books that you read from cover to cover in a few days. Rather, I find myself picking it up when I have a free moment and picking the story of a ball player I remember from my childhood. Once I finish that group of stories, I'll probably start on more contemporary players before finishing up with the nineteenth century guys. Indiana is about to begin celebrating its 200th birthday as a state, and I think anyone interested in Hoosier history could be doing themselves a favor by buying Pete's book. It's a great way to spend the winter months as we wait for another baseball season to start. Go Mets!

By Cymberle I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest reviewI eat up just about anything I can find about the paranormal-- hauntings being my favorite. So you can imagine that I've read about lots of different haunted places. What I loved about this book is that it concentrated on a small, very haunted state. While I am quite familiar with some of the locations, others I don't know well at all. Fresh information presented in an entertaining fashion, 13 Most Haunted in Massachusetts is a great paranormal reference. What I liked:Locations that haven't been hashed to death. I enjoyed reading about places that I've heard of but not in depth. New material makes for interesting reading.Personal experience mixed with history. Mr. Baltrusis didn't just rehash the history of the haunted locations. He drew me in with personal experiences and interviews with others in the field. The writing itself. This book flows in a conversational manner, making for enjoyable reading. Sure the subject matter is interesting, but it's the author's presentation that truly made this book great.Pictures. Yes, I loved the pictures included in the book. They helped me picture the scenes in my mind and brought everything to life.I confess, there really wasn't much I didn't like-- at least nothing worth noting. When I head to Massachusetts, I'll be using this book for my tours. If you love the paranormal, this is a must-read.

This book is well researched and is written with a polished flair. The stories will keep you up reading well past bedtime. I've been to a few of these haunts, but am dying (no pun intended) to check out the rest after reading this amazing book.

Blevins The text is so faint that it mostly looks like a series of vertical lines, and in many places is this edition, is completely unreadable. It is a shame, because this book serves as retort to the version of the "facts" that we've been given in history books. To actually read the book I recommend the online version available from the Library of Congress.

I generally find an interesting piece of information that requires that I in turn find another source or two for confirmation, I end up reading several books. What we have been told about "the war between the states" (I will no longer call it a civil war) is revisionist history and a fraud as to what the facts actually were. My trust level of those we entrust to give us the facts and not treat us like mushrooms is at an all time low.

This book is an intellectual journey. It is based in the fundamental Middle-American values and opinions, good and bad, of the happy days of the fifties. These values and opinions are dragged kicking and screaming through a rich and varied set of experiences as a young man, amazingly, is nurtured and tolerated by a usually hidebound navy. The journey ends with summaries about Russia, Us Military policy and strategy, and the prospects for the social and political turmoil in America.

An Officer's Story: A Politico-Military Journey, by Steve Kime

About the Author Steve F. Kime, a retired navy captain, is not a cookie-cutter product of a military academy. He enjoyed an unusual career that led him from his roots in Indiana to submarine duty, a doctorate at Harvard, service in Russia during treaty negotiations and the shoot down of an airliner, and responsibilities in strategy, intelligence, and higher education. He pulls no punches in relating his Mid-America upbringing and the experiences of his unusual career to current social, political, and military issues.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For Officers of Any Service, a Reminder to Think Outside the Box By R. Phillips Capt. Kime's career path in the Navy was anything but typical, from the way he entered the service, to his early experiences in submarines, onward to attache duty in the Cold-War era of the Soviet Union, and then serving as an educator at the National War College and beyond. This story is in part a practical lesson in the value of unconventional thinking, and is peppered with Capt. Kime's personal experiences with such luminaries as Bobby Ray Inman or John Allen, among many others. It is by turns entertaining, instructive, and thought-provoking. For young officers of any service, Capt. Kime's experiences demonstrate the realm of the possible. For those farther along in their careers, it is a reminder to think outside the box!

An Officer's Story By TAB An Officer's Story is the story of the fascinating and highly unorthodox career of a naval officer who earned a Harvbard PhD, spent two tours of duty in Moscow and other tours either involved in negotiating treaties with the Soviets or on the faculties of the National War College and the Naval Academy. But the book is much more than the story of an interesting career. It could almost be said that it is three books. The first, covering the author's youth, is an insightful reflection on the culture of the American middle class of the 1950s:patriotism, hard work, self-sufficiency, closeness of family, respect for authority, and belief that the next generation would have it better. The author juxtaposes these values with the entitlement culture of today. The "third book" comprises the closing chapters where the author presents a series of short essays on geoplolitics, professional education for naval officers, and an epilogue on America's future, which is very thought-proking and more than a little unsettling. This reviewer highly recommends An Officer's Story, less perhaps for the interesting narrativeconcerning the author's career than for his relections on what is happening to the culture that made America great. In his words, "...A sober look at all this suggests that the decline (of America) may be irreversible. American innovativeness and productivity, based on recovery of the American work ethic, could be resurrected, but the will to restore America is not visible."That is a sobering and discomfiting thought and one that demands serious reflection.

A fascinating and thought-provoking read By Amazon Customer By Andrea BaridonAs someone who has known Steve Kime for more than two decades and read numerous articles and other of his writings, I once again am intrigued by his ability to put his thinking into words that make the reader sit up and take notice. Dr. Kime’s family, education, military, and occupational histories combine to create a unique personal background for shaping his views of the world. But it is his fundamental intelligence, the ability to sort and analyze complex events, then articulate his vision of they might mean for the future of America (and perhaps the world) that are the heart of An Officer’s Story. Whether readers agree or disagree with all or parts of his conclusions, they will find this book a rich and thought-provoking reading experience.

The hard work of nineteenth-century Irish immigrants in Waterbury helped place the city on the map as the Brass Capital of the World. In the early years of immigration, Irish Catholics held Mass in secret, but eventually beautiful churches were built, attracting the most revered clergy in Connecticut. Soon Irish and Irish Americans established themselves as city leaders and professionals in the community. Dr. Charles A. Monagan was a founding member of St. Marys Hospital, while his son John later became mayor. Some achieved fame through their excellence in sports, such as Roger Connor, who held a long-standing record for career home runs until it was broken by Babe Ruth. Detailed research and oral histories from living descendants bring to light the remarkable Waterbury Irish legacy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Buy This Book! By Terry Janet has thoroughly researched the exodus of emigrants from Ireland and their arrival to Waterbury. She writes about the history behind their influx and the influence these Irish immigrants had on the development of the town. Her writing is clear and concise, making it an easy read. It covers such a broad range of topics relating to the Wtby Irish that even people who have grown up in Waterbury will find stories and information that are new to them. What makes the book so interesting is that Janet zeroes in on the many and varied Irish families and individuals who have contributed to the history of Waterbury in some way. The book is filled with unique photos from the personal family albums of many Waterbury Irish Americans. The richness of the stories and pictures make one want to jump into the book and experience what life was like back then just for a brief moment. But since that is impossible, reading the book is the next best thing. This is a comprehensive book about Irish immigrants and their historical, economic, and social impact in Waterbury. It is a must have for all those who are interested in the Irish of Waterbury.

*Includes pictures *Profiles Palmyra's origins, its relationship with Rome, its culture, and more *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built the temple of the Lord and his own palace, Solomon rebuilt the villages that Hiram[a] had given him, and settled Israelites in them. Solomon then went to Hamath Zobah and captured it. He also built up Tadmor in the desert and all the store cities he had built in Hamath.” – The Bible’s reference to Palmyra (as Tadmor) in II Chronicles 8 Recently, the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra has become a major source of news because the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has embarked on a campaign to destroy the temples and art of the pre-Islamic city. For many people throughout the world, ISIS’s campaign was the first time they heard about the city, but Palmyra’s importance and history can be traced back to well before the Roman Empire. In fact, Palmyra was unique among the many important cities of the ancient world because, like Carthage before it, it was a city that was also a culture. Palmyrene culture, from the arts to religion, borrowed from numerous other peoples throughout the ancient world to create a culture that was uniquely “Palmyrene”. Palmyra became a city like no other, and its culture shined bright for several centuries before it was finally extinguished. The people of Palmyra truly developed a vibrant culture that eventually placed the city among some of the greatest of the ancient world. Palmyra’s influential position in world history was largely due to its economic prowess, which was achieved not through conquest or exploration but through its position as the preeminent trading center in the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern regions. Donkey and camel caravans brought precious commodities from both the west and east through the gates of Palmyra, which eventually resulted in the city becoming an oasis of wealth in the middle of the Syrian desert. For hundreds of years, Palmyra’s wealth was a testament to its greatness, and its leaders displayed their political acumen by playing the middleman between the powerful Roman and Parthian Empires. As a result, the Palmyrenes built an eclectic culture that was as sophisticated as any of their contemporaries, but eventually the leadership of Palmyra overestimated their power and the greatness of their city quickly came crumbling down. Ancient Palmyra: The History and Legacy of One of Antiquity’s Greatest Cities looks at the influential Semitic settlement that flourished for thousands of years. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Palmyra like never before, in no time at all.

The only color and the only good photograph is on the cover. The type is about a third the size of a normal book, the photographs are all bad reproductions in black and white, grainy and very unsatisfying to look at. I felt that I could do much better going on line to find information. When I read a book, I like to enjoy the process. This one is hard to look at. Just wonder if the other reviewers are friends of the people who publish this or have even looked at it.

Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Patrick have completed the first compendium of African Americans depicted on U.S. Postage stamp from 1940 to 2015. ( Dr. Sullivan started collecting stamps as a child, which encouraged him to become an educator. He was inspired by the work of Booker T, Washington, George Washington Carver, and W. E . B. Du Bois.) The extraordinary and innumerable achievements of African Americans have shaped the story of America by the roles they have played and continue to bestow in the development of this country and the world. Their achievements have enriched all aspects of American society. While African Americans' contributions are often missing from the pages of history, their immense achievements are found in art, music, theatre, invention, military service, education, architecture, literature, science, business, diplomacy, journalism, civil rights, law, sports, scientific discovery, exploration, medicine, agriculture, politics, cinema, and many other areas. A narrative is presented for each individual honored on a stamp, the issue date and the significant social, economic, educational, and cultural roles each individual played in the development of America as the foremost country in the world. Additional achievers are highlighted under each biography whose achievements are stamped in history. The mission of this book is to introduce youth and others to comprehend and apply the ability to overcome obstacles, persist, pursue excellence and follow their dreams through a thirst for education. Dr. George Washington Carver once wrote, "Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom." Through education, our youth can continue the sterling contributions of the gifted African American men and women highlighted in this book. It also encourages individuals to consider stamp collecting as a hobby. Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Patrick believe this book is an important addition to your family's home library and a valuable reference and educational tool in schools throughout the nation.

While I was growing up, she always purchased stamps from the Black Heritage series for me and talked to me about the history of the person featured on the stamp. Upon hearing about this book, I thought it would be the perfect birthday gift for her! She absolutely loved it! Once I saw the book, I knew I would also have to get one for my home library. It contains over 500 pages of substantive information on the persons and events depicted on the stamps and does a very good job putting things into context for the reader by conveying what was going on at the time the person lived or event occurred. "African American Achievement Stamped Through History" also contains interesting lesser known historical facts. The material is well presented. My teenage son who is into history has also enjoyed the book. While this book would be great for a stamp collector, as a history buff, it also has my attention!

Excerpt from The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described: In Accordance With the Rubrics of Liturgical Books, the Decrees of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, the Code of Canon Law, and Approved AuthorsThe Catholic Church has surrounded all the acts of Divine Worship with a definite ceremonial to ensure on the one hand their due accomplishment, and on the other to safeguard the external reverence that should accompany them. She never employs ceremonial for the sake of the ceremony itself. Each separate rite has grown out of the twofold object that we have enunciated, even though in the process of time the origin, and the history of the development, of such rite may long have been forgotten. The Church is the guardian of all these sacred rites. To her it belongs to sanction a further development of them, to curtail such as may have become purposeless, or to impose new conditions heretofore uncalled for. Thus there has grown up a great body of legislation, controlled and regulated by two of the Roman Congregations, those of the Rites and of Ceremonial. Numberless commentators have written on the history of the ceremonies, while many others have treated them from the purely practical point of view.A "Ceremonial" in the latter sense calls for frequent revision if it is to be thoroughly in accord with the most recent legislation of the Holy See. Thus even the pages of the present work, as they issue from the press, call for modification in accordance with the new "Codex Iuris Canonici."For a long time past the Clergy in England have been without a Manual of Ceremonies, in their own tongue, possessing any claim to accuracy or completeness. They have been obliged to fall back upon excellent Latin or French treatises which often do not take account of local circumstances, and are in many cases almost useless to the devoted laymen upon whose zealous help the proper carrying out of our liturgical functions so greatly depends. This pressing want has now been fully supplied by the learned compiler of this manual of "The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite," and by the publishers who present his work in such satisfactory form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has long been out of print. Alternatives include finding an old edition online (anywhere from $50 to $200), or buying the edition recently updated by Dom Alcuin Reid ($55). This edition is a photocopy of the 1920 edition and is sold for an unbelievably low price of $11. Anyone connected with the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (priests, servers, sacristans, musicians) needs this indispensable book.

I have a rather aged copy of the original version of this book in my library, and hoped the Kindle edition would give me a working copy that I could easily refer to on my iPhone. Instead, I found it to be a partial and confused version-- I don't know who did the scanning and copying, but it's abundantly clear that they didn't check their work afterwards. I don't know if this copy is salvable, or if they should just start over.

The North American P-51 Mustang powered by the British-designed Rolls-Royce Merlin/Packard engine was, quite simply, the best long-range escort fighter of the World War Two era. Entering service in November 1943, it curtailed prohibitive losses suffered by the heavy bombers of the US Eight Army Air Force which carried out the strategic daylight bombing campaign against the Third Reich. In the European Theater of Operations the USAAF also deployed Mustangs, with great success, as free-ranging strafers, fighter-bombers, scouts and reconnaissance aircraft. Eventually, it was the P-51 that broke the backbone of the Luftwaffe.REVIEWS excellent color profiles of specific tanks, and with a note in both English and Polish naming the unit and when/where the tank was used. Very much a book for scale modelers looking to get specific details right for their models, and at good value for money too.Military Modeling

Napoleon was the hero of his age, a man who helped France become, briefly, a hugely impressive European power. In 1814, he was imprisoned on Elba, planning an escape and plotting his course of action once he had done so. From the time he landed back in France to his loss at Waterloo, one hundred days elapsed. Scholar Alan Schom, an expert in the history of the Napoleonic era, outlines the key personalities and events of those hundred days in 1815. Napoleon is a far cry from the heroic leader of the time before he was imprisoned in Elba, attempting to gather forces and convince his old friends to help him once again. Despite the difficulties he faced from his irresponsible brothers, and acting in opposition to the statesman Talleyrand, Napoleon was only a whisker away from a famous triumph, and only eventually defeated by the mobilised force of the Allies. It was the Duke of Wellington and Blücher who defeated Napoleon, who was prepared to take on England, Austria, Prussia and Russia. The book includes a brilliant account of the manoeuvres at Waterloo, and is a fantastic tale of daring that is a useful book exactly 200 years on from the 100 days. ‘Undoubtedly the best account of this episode in English’ — Richard Holmes, The Times Literary Supplement ‘Alan Schom has written a racy account, backed by copious detail and an abundance of quotations...a good read’ — Michael Carver, Sunday Telegraph ‘A brisk, pacey account of the Hundred Days, written in a fluent and engaging manner...There are excellent sketches of Fouché, Talleyrand and Carnot and a most able analysis of the background...as well as fascinating material on espionage and intelligence’ — Frank McLynn in the Literary Review ‘A riveting narrative of events...a sparkling portrait gallery of the personalities who shaped those events’ — Russell F. Weigely, author of The Age of Battles Alan Schom was a professor of French and European history before retiring to write full-time. He is the author of Emile Zola: A Biography and Trafalgar. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Should have stuck to Elba By Betsy The actual battle of Waterloo takes up only a small part of this book. Most of it is concerned with Napoleon's return to France from Elba and the effort to set up a new government. After the battle, there is short but succinct summary about Napoleon's fate, and that of those who had flocked to his standard. It's an interesting book; but it's difficult to feel much empathy for a man who head kept his country at war for so many years, and then didn't know when to quit.

'She was seventy-two, according to her chart. Her face was an undulating field of deep wrinkles, much like the rows of squash and snap beans she had tended on the tiny farm in Waynesboro, Mississippi where she had lived with her husband, Ralph. Ralph worked over at the saw mill in Millry, about forty miles away. Each day at sunup Ralph cranked up the steel-blue, rust-covered Ford Model T for the hour-long drive to work, while Sadie got busy getting her four young’uns ready for school, feeding the dozen or so chickens, and gathering eggs. Looking now into her milky cataract-laden eyes revealed little. There simply wasn’t much behind those eyes. Ralph had seen to that. Her long, gnarled fingers revealed the story of a simple, hard-working woman. No secrets here. Sadie was tough; tough enough to rise each day and spend hours in the blistering Mississippi heat and suffocating humidity filling a burlap sack with pole beans, cucumbers, or any blessed thing that would grow in this God-forsaken field to keep food on the table for Ralph and the children. Her hands were so severely calloused there wasn’t enough malleable epidermal tissue left for fingerprints. The knuckles looked like someone had lifted up her fingernails and shoved golf balls midway up each digit. You don’t get hands like this sittin’ on the front porch swing sippin’ mint juleps. No siree; Sadie Phillips was a real woman, a warrior. Sadie was one tough cookie. She was ambulatory. Only she was one of the walking dead.' War, race riots, integration, equal rights protests, and assassinations. To sophomore psychology student Gary Stanley, it seemed the whole world had gone crazy. That is, until he discovers Breezeland; a hidden refuge from the hostility and madness sweeping the nation. A bastion of peace and tranquility...but a place of dark secrets. Unfortunately, as Gary would soon learn, the insanity was only beginning. Based on real people, real stories. Real crazy.

A skillful account of a young college student's experiences working at an upscale mental hospital in early 1970s Mobile, Alabama. Plenty of wild stories, sad situations, and strange coincidences, along with some very honest observations about race relations in the Deep South of 45 years ago. The common thread is an unlikely friendship he develops with another staff member during his 5 years there. A short read, but very worthwhile!

<h2></h2> <p><b>An unflinching look at nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies.<br></b><br> In an accessible, conversational format, Cornel West, with distinguished scholar Christa Buschendorf, provides a fresh perspective on six revolutionary African American leaders: Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Malcolm X, and Ida B. Wells. In dialogue with Buschendorf, West examines the impact of these men and women on their own eras and across the decades. He not only rediscovers the integrity and commitment within these passionate advocates but also their fault lines. <br> &nbsp;<br> West, in these illuminating conversations with the German scholar and thinker Christa Buschendorf, describes Douglass as a complex man who is both &ldquo;<i>the </i>towering Black freedom fighter of the nineteenth century&rdquo; and a product of his time who lost sight of the fight for civil rights after the emancipation. He calls Du Bois &ldquo;undeniably the most important Black intellectual of the twentieth century&rdquo; and explores the more radical aspects of his thinking in order to understand his uncompromising critique of the United States, which has been omitted from the American collective memory. West argues that our selective memory has sanitized and even &ldquo;Santaclausified&rdquo; Martin Luther King Jr., rendering him less radical, and has marginalized Ella Baker, who embodies the grassroots organizing of the civil rights movement. The controversial Malcolm X, who is often seen as a proponent of reverse racism, hatred, and violence, has been demonized in a false opposition with King, while the appeal of his rhetoric and sincerity to students has been sidelined. Ida B. Wells, West argues, shares Malcolm X&rsquo;s radical spirit and fearless speech, but has &ldquo;often become the victim of public amnesia.&rdquo;<br> &nbsp;<br> By providing new insights that humanize all of these well-known figures, in the engrossing dialogue with Buschendorf, and in his insightful introduction and powerful closing essay, Cornel West takes an important step in rekindling the Black prophetic fire so essential in the age of Obama.</p> Black Prophetic FireBy Cornel West, Christa Buschendorf

All rights reserved.</span> <br> <b>INTRODUCTION</b><br> Why We Need to Talk About Black Prophetic Fire<br> &nbsp;<br> Are we witnessing the death of Black prophetic fire in our time? Are we experiencing the demise of the Black prophetic tradition in present-day America? Do the great prophetic figures and social movements no longer resonate in the depth of our souls? Have we forgotten how beautiful it is to be on fire for justice? These are some of the questions I wrestle with in this book.<br> &nbsp;<br> Since the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., it is clear that something has died in Black America. The last great efforts for Black collective triumph were inspired by the massive rebellions in response to Dr. King&rsquo;s murder. Yet these gallant actions were met with increasing repression and clever strategies of co-optation by the powers that be. The fundamental shift from a we-consciousness to an I-consciousness reflected not only a growing sense of Black collective&nbsp;defeat but also a Black embrace of the seductive myth of individualism in American culture. Black people once put a premium on serving the community, lifting others, and finding joy in empowering others. Today, most Black people have succumbed to individualistic projects in pursuit of wealth, health, and status. Black people once had a strong prophetic tradition of lifting every voice. Today, most Black people engage in the petty practice of chasing dollars. American&nbsp;society is ruled by big money, and American culture is a way of life obsessed with money. This is true for capitalist societies and cultures around the world. The Black prophetic tradition&mdash;along with the prophetic traditions of other groups&mdash;is a strong counter-force to these tendencies of our times. Integrity cannot be reduced to cupidity, decency cannot be reduced to chicanery, and justice cannot be reduced to market price. The fundamental motivation for this book is to resurrect Black prophetic fire in our day&mdash;especially among the younger generation. I want to reinvigorate the Black prophetic tradition and to keep alive the memory of Black prophetic figures and movements. I consider the Black prophetic tradition one of the greatest treasures in the modern world. It has been the leaven in the American democratic loaf. Without the Black prophetic tradition, much of the best of America would be lost and some of the best of the modern world would be forgotten.<br> &nbsp;<br> All the great figures in this book courageously raised their voices in order to bear witness to people&rsquo;s suffering. These Black prophetic figures are connected to collective efforts to overcome injustice and make the world a better place for everyone. Even as distinct individuals, they are driven by a we-consciousness that is concerned with the needs of others. More importantly, they are willing to renounce petty pleasures and accept awesome burdens. Tremendous sacrifice and painful loneliness sit at the center of who they are and what they do. Yet we are deeply indebted to who they were and what they did.<br> &nbsp;<br> Unfortunately, their mainstream reception is shaped according to the cultural icon of the self-made man or the individual charismatic leader. This is especially true for the male figures. This is not to say that they did not fulfill the function of leaders and speakers of their organizations. But I want to point out that any conception of the charismatic leader severed from social movements is false. I consider leaders and movements to be inseparable. There is no Frederick Douglass without the Abolitionist movement. There is no W. E. B. Du Bois without the Pan-Africanist, international workers&rsquo;, and Black freedom movements. There is no Martin Luther&nbsp;King Jr. without the anti-imperialist, workers&rsquo;, and civil rights movements. There is no Ella Baker without the anti-US-apartheid and Puerto Rican independence movements. There is no Malcolm X without the Black Nationalist and human rights movements. And there is no Ida B. Wells without the anti-US-terrorist and Black women&rsquo;s movements.<br> &nbsp;<br> There is a gender difference in regard to men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s roles assigned in social movements. This shapes their reception in history books and in popular culture. Male figures are prominent on the basis of their highly visible positions. They often are chosen to represent the movement, usually due to their charismatic qualities. Yet despite the charisma of many women leaders, it is difficult for them to be chosen to represent the movement. They are often confined to untiring efforts in organizing the movement. As a consequence, even when women give speeches, even when they contribute to the political thinking of movements, their words are not taken as seriously as they ought to be. One of the aims of our dialogues about the Black prophetic tradition is to bear witness to the fiery prophetic spirit of Ida B. Wells by presenting examples of her fearless speech and action, and to bear witness to the deep democratic sensibilities of Ella&nbsp;Baker, who understood better than any of the others the fundamental role of movements in bringing about fundamental social change.<br> &nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br><br> This book becomes even more important in the age of Obama, precisely because the presence of a Black president in the White House complicates our understanding of the Black prophetic tradition. If high status in American society and white points of reference are the measure of the Black freedom movement, then this moment in Black history is the ultimate success. But if the suffering of Black people&mdash;especially Black poor and working people&mdash;is the ultimate measure of the Black freedom movement, then this moment in Black history is catastrophic&mdash;sadly continuous with the past. With the Black middle class losing nearly 60 percent of its wealth, the Black working class devastated with stagnating wages and increasing prices, and the Black poor ravaged by massive unemployment, decrepit schools, indecent housing, and hyperincarceration in the new Jim Crow, the age of Obama looks bleak through the lens of the Black prophetic tradition. This prophetic viewpoint is not a personal attack on a Black president; rather it is a wholesale indictment of the system led by a complicitous Black president.<br> &nbsp;<br> The Black prophetic tradition highlights the crucial role of social movements in the United States and abroad. The Occupy Wall Street movement was a global response to the thirty-year class war&nbsp;from above, which pushed the middle class into the ranks of the working class and poor, and even further exacerbated the sufferings of working-class and poor people. The 2008 financial crisis, primarily caused by the systemic greed of unregulated Wall Street oligarchs and their bailout by the Wall Street&ndash;dominated US government, revealed the degree to which American society is ruled by big money. And the fact that not one Wall Street bank executive&mdash;despite massive criminality on Wall Street&mdash;has gone to jail, while any poor and, especially, Black person caught with crack goes straight to prison, shows just how unjust our justice system is. The realities of the power of big banks and corporations are hidden and concealed by a corporate&nbsp;media that specializes in generating weapons of mass distraction. This systemic concealment also holds for the military-industrial complex, be it the Pentagon or the CIA. Rarely are the death-dealing activities of both institutions made public to the American citizenry. And courageous whistle-blowers&mdash;such as Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange, John Kiriakou, and Edward Snowden&mdash;who reveal to the public the corrupt activities of the US government are severely punished. Even the recent discussions about drones dropping bombs on innocent civilians remain confined to American citizens. The thousands of non-American civilian victims&mdash;including hundreds of children&mdash;receive little or no attention in the corporate media. The Black prophetic tradition claims that the life of a precious baby in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Haiti, Gaza, Tel Aviv, Lagos, Bogot&aacute;, or anywhere else has the same value as a precious baby in the USA.<br> &nbsp;<br> The Black prophetic tradition accents the fightback of poor and working people, be it in the United States against big money, be it in the Middle East against Arab autocratic rule or Israeli occupation, be it against African authoritarian governments abetted by US forces or Chinese money, be it in Latin America against oligarchic regimes in collaboration with big banks and corporations, or be it in Europe against austerity measures that benefit big creditors and punish everyday people. In short, the Black prophetic tradition is local in content and international in character.<br> &nbsp;<br> The deep hope shot through this dialogue is that Black prophetic fire never dies, that the Black prophetic tradition forever flourishes, and that a new wave of young brothers and sisters of all colors see and feel that it is a beautiful thing to be on fire for justice and that there is no greater joy than inspiring and empowering others&mdash;especially the least of these, the precious and priceless wretched of the earth!<br> &mdash;CW </p>
