1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read! By Christina Turrubiate I am loving this book! Only through chapter 6, but I can't put the book, better yet my Kindle, down! This story is about my Great-Grandmother, so it is even more special to me. It is well written and easy to read, but very interesting, I even forget I know the girl in the book! The story is wrapped around Texas History, so much so that I am going to recommend it as a novel choice for the Texas History class at our Homeschool Coop. Love It!

I was surprised by the level of detail contained within its pages. Sometimes I can barely remember what I was doing last night, much less decades ago. The personal stories are intertwined with historical events which gives everything a broader context. I found myself comparing my life to growing up in the early 20th century in Burleson County, TX - what a contrast!

Rowbottom Sections of incomplete research regarding the Owens Valley for this historical recreation (which I know first hand) make me doubt other parts about the LA side of history, which is really the focus of the book. Although the book is much more "readable" than some of his more recent bibliographical references, I found too many liberties were taken with the writer's slants about how and why people did things.

However By MKR Interesting story that presents a balanced view of the lives and hardships of the populace of rural Georgia in the 1920 s. I live within 20 miles of Draketown, but had never been there. This story inspired me to go there and see the oblisk.I did not find the writing to be very good. However, the author accomplished her goal of recording the facts of this tragic story.

About the Author John Robertson has been Professor of the History of Political Thought at Cambridge since 2010. He covers the intellectual history of early modern and Enlightenment Europe, with particular interests in political and historical thought, and in the Enlightenment in Scotland and in Italy. His books include the comparative study The Case for the Enlightenment: Scotland and Naples 1680-1760 (Cambridge University Press, 2005), and he is now working on the uses of sacred history in political and social thought between 1650 and 1800. For many years he taught History at Oxford, as a University Lecturer in the Faculty of History and a Fellow of St Hugh's College, and he has held visiting appointments in Germany, the United States and, most recently in Paris.

I simply couldn't drum up the interest to keep reading. I generally focus on VSI books that cover more ancient times or broader concepts, so I can't rule out that it is simply my tastes and not the book which is at fault.
