Kime's career path in the Navy was anything but typical, from the way he entered the service, to his early experiences in submarines, onward to attache duty in the Cold-War era of the Soviet Union, and then serving as an educator at the National War College and beyond. This story is in part a practical lesson in the value of unconventional thinking, and is peppered with Capt. Kime's personal experiences with such luminaries as Bobby Ray Inman or John Allen, among many others. It is by turns entertaining, instructive, and thought-provoking. For young officers of any service, Capt. Kime's experiences demonstrate the realm of the possible. For those farther along in their careers, it is a reminder to think outside the box!

An Officer's Story By TAB An Officer's Story is the story of the fascinating and highly unorthodox career of a naval officer who earned a Harvbard PhD, spent two tours of duty in Moscow and other tours either involved in negotiating treaties with the Soviets or on the faculties of the National War College and the Naval Academy.But the book is much more than the story of an interesting career.It could almost be said that it is three books. The first, covering the author's youth, is an insightful reflection on the culture of the American middle class of the 1950s:patriotism, hard work, self-sufficiency, closeness of family, respect for authority, and belief that the next generation would have it better.The author juxtaposes these values with the entitlement culture of today.The "third book" comprises the closing chapters where the author presents a series of short essays on geoplolitics, professional education for naval officers, and an epilogue on America's future, which is very thought-proking and more than a little unsettling.This reviewer highly recommends An Officer's Story, less perhaps for the interesting narrativeconcerning the author's career than for his relections on what is happening to the culture that made America great. In his words, "...A sober look at all this suggests that the decline (of America) may be irreversible. American innovativeness and productivity, based on recovery of the American work ethic, could be resurrected,but the will to restore America is not visible."That is a sobering and discomfiting thought and one that demands serious reflection.

A fascinating and thought-provoking read By Amazon Customer By Andrea BaridonAs someone who has known Steve Kime for more than two decades and read numerous articles and other of his writings, I once again am intrigued by his ability to put his thinking into words that make the reader sit up and take notice. Dr. Kime’s family, education, military, and occupational histories combine to create a unique personal background for shaping his views of the world. But it is his fundamental intelligence, the ability to sort and analyze complex events, then articulate his vision of they might mean for the future of America (and perhaps the world) that are the heart of An Officer’s Story. Whether readers agree or disagree with all or parts of his conclusions, they will find this book a rich and thought-provoking reading experience.

She writes about the history behind their influx and the influence these Irish immigrants had on the development of the town. Her writing is clear and concise, making it an easy read. It covers such a broad range of topics relating to the Wtby Irish that even people who have grown up in Waterbury will find stories and information that are new to them. What makes the book so interesting is that Janet zeroes in on the many and varied Irish families and individuals who have contributed to the history of Waterbury in some way. The book is filled with unique photos from the personal family albums of many Waterbury Irish Americans. The richness of the stories and pictures make one want to jump into the book and experience what life was like back then just for a brief moment. But since that is impossible, reading the book is the next best thing.This is a comprehensive book about Irish immigrants and their historical, economic, and social impact in Waterbury. It is a must have for all those who are interested in the Irish of Waterbury.

The only color and the only good photograph is on the cover. The type is about a third the size of a normal book, the photographs are all bad reproductions in black and white, grainy and very unsatisfying to look at. I felt that I could do much better going on line to find information. When I read a book, I like to enjoy the process. This one is hard to look at. Just wonder if the other reviewers are friends of the people who publish this or have even looked at it.
