La Brevísima relación fue escrita por fray Bartolomé de las Casas y dedicada al príncipe Felipe —quien fue posteriormente el rey Felipe II de España—, encargado por el rey Carlos V, su padre, de los asuntos de Indias por aquel tiempo. Con su obra, las Casas quiso que el futuro rey de España conociera las injusticias que cometían los españoles en América. Hacia 1539, las Casas comenzó en México la redacción de la Destrucción de las Indias. En 1542, estando en España, acabó una primera redacción. Un resumen de la obra parece ser que le fue leído al rey Carlos I y luego públicamente en la Comisión de Valladolid que dieron lugar a las Leyes Nuevas. En 1546, tras el fracaso de dichas leyes, añadió algún comentario más. Después, en 1547 la aumentó con algunos párrafos e intentó imprimir una versión muy retocada usando el seudónimo: Istoria sumaria y relación brevísima y verdadera de lo que vio y escribió el reverendo padre fray Bartolomé de la Peña. En 1552, imprimió en Sevilla, en la imprenta de Sebastián Trugillo y sin pasarla por censura previa la versión primera, de nuevo ampliada con información reciente: Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias. De la primera Brevísima se conserva un manuscrito hológrafo en el Archivo Histórico de la Provincia de los Dominicos de Aragón, en Valencia. Las Casas no tuvo consecuencias por haber publicado la Brevísima. La obra no fue recogida hasta la cédula real del 21 de septiembre de 1556 (que no la cita específicamente). Este libro no fue censurado en España y pudo circular libremente, tal vez por el respeto que la corona española tenía respecto de su autor.

Fray Bartolomé - one of the first human rights champions By Sundiver The text takes the form of a lengthy letter to the Emperor Philip in which Fray Bartolomé complains passionately about the gruesome treatment of the natives on the caribean islands as well the mainland by the ruthless Conquistores.While the brutallity of the Conquistadores may belong to common knowledge the role of the church isn't. Many of the clerics sided with natives and while conversion was an aim, anihiliation of the indigenious filled the writer with horror for the simple fact that he himself believed that in addition to the physical abuse that the "indians" where deprived of spiritiual salvation.Fray Bartolomé lists some gruesome details of the bad treatment and makes clear that for the sake of brevity the accounts are far from complete. Burnind and roasting people alive must have been done in many cases and in great numbers and literally is reminiscent of the "holocaust". From his description it must be concluded that within decades the population was brought down from millions to a fraction of that. Besides the devastating military superiority used recklessly to massacre scores of indians. Fray Bartolomé complains about the enslavement of the survivors. Males where separated from females. The first worked themselves to death in the silver mines and the women sent to work on the fields. The latter without proper nurishement were unable to sustain the newborns and children, which soon died and the separation of sexes caused the extermination of a people for lack of "generation".I don't want this review to be considered as "anti-spanish". Far from that, the harshest and earlist criticis of the first european colonial expansion where Spaniards themselves. Furthermore Fray Bartolomé desribes the natives as utterly helpful and friendly and in some cases culturally refined. Non of this culture of millions has survived this genocide.On a side note: There is no mention of old world diseases being significant from which sadly the conclusion follows that the killing was intentional in every case.

Breve pero interesante By gerzeus Como el título lo indica, el texto es bastante breve pero de gran utilidad si lo que buscas es conocer más información acerca de la colonización en la Nueva Expaña, esto visto desde la perspectiva de españoles. La mayor parte del libro trata acerca del maltrato y humillaciones que recibían los nativos americanos tanto por soldados como por evangelizadores.

About the Author Vincent E. Feeney received a BA from San Jose State University, an MA from the University of Vermont, and a PhD from the University of Washington, all in History. He was Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Vermont 1977-2006. Since 2003 he has been a Lecturer for the Vermont Humanities Council. Feeney is also the author of Finnigans, Slaters, and Stonepeggers: A History of the Irish in Vermont (Images from the Past, 2009); The Great Falls on Onion River: A History of Winooski, Vermont (Winooski History Society, 2002); and Vermont: An Illustrated History with John Duffy (American Heritage Press, 2000). He is a member of the Vermont Historical Society, Center for Research on Vermont, Chittenden County Historical Society (President 1999-2003), and the Winooski Historical Society.

Over all a book that needed to be written By Frank Hanley This is a book that fills a void about the history of the great city of Burlington, Vermont on Lake Champlain. The only negative comment I have would be about the information on the urban renewal project. I found it to be a little one sided in favor of the project. There was little mention of the problem urban renewal caused and to this day has not been addressed, the loss of housing and this shortage is still present today.

Born on a Mississippi farm, Pvt. Eugene McLaurin had reached 30 years of age when his unit began its advance on the Western Front. McLaurin's diary, written during nine weeks before the Armistice, records the horrors he encountered during his assignment to burial detail, of bodies torn apart, and burial rituals interrupted by gunfire or the occasional stealth attack by a German fighter plane, its engines muffled before emitting its deadly machine gun fire. In spite of his modest rank, McLaurin was a Presbyterian minister qualified to be a commissioned officer. Instead, he was assistant to the battalion chaplain whose admiration for his assistant's courageous service under fire would result in his attempts to secure a commission for his aide, including appealing to the US Congress. Love and War By Amazon Customer Eugene McLaurin was a young pastor who volunteered to serve with soldiers from Texas and Oklahoma during the final months of World War I. During his year away from home, he stayed in touch, through letters, with the woman he (secretly) became engaged to before shipping off. He was never commissioned as a chaplain, though he performed many of the duties; essentially he spent his war time tending to those who would never return home. The Crossed Hands of God is a rather unique military story in that it combines the heart-numbing brutality of searching for the (sometimes) disassembled bodies of war victims with the gentlemanly courtship of this soldier’s tender Texas flower of a fiancée. Augmented with dozens of photos found among McLaurin’s papers and uniform, the book serves as a personal guide to the violence of war and the gentle promise of love.
