Desde entonces y hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX, la cara más codiciosa pero también la más curiosa y expedicionaria del ser humano, no ha dejado de brindar episodios de búsqueda. Algunos, como Lope de Aguirre, llegaron incluso a perder el juicio, perpetrando auténticas masacres y entuertos con el único fin de erigirse en el líder de la expedición de El Dorado. Asesinó cruentamente a todos los miembros del grupo hasta hacerse con el mando y poco a poco fue acabando con la vida de aquellos que pudieran hacerle sombra o inflamasen su recelo. Hasta tal punto llegó su locura, que arrastrado por su delirio de avaricia, llegó incluso a acaudillar una rebelión contra la monarquía española y mandar cartas a España comunicando a los monarcas que renegaba de la Corona y que todo lo que encontrase se lo quedaría él sin rendir cuentas a nadie. Este fue el motivo, seguramente, por el que Simón Bolívar dejó escrito que Lope de Aguirre fue el primero en declarar la independencia de una región de América.
