Excerpt from The Great Awakening: A History of the Revival of Religion in the Time of Edwards and WhitefieldDuring the year 1840, public meetings were held in some places, and proposed in others, in commemoration of what Edwards called "The Revival of Religion in New England in 1740." This first suggested to the author the design of the present work. No history of that revival had ever been attempted. Its importance in itself, and in its influence on the subsequent state of the churches, was universally acknowledged. Yet opinions concerning it were various and discordant, even among evangelical ministers; some thinking it worthy of unmixed eulogy in public celebrations, others speaking of it with only guarded and qualified commendation, and others doubting whether it should not be mentioned rather with censure than otherwise. For the last ten years, too, the advocates of all kinds of "measures," new and old, have been asserting that the events and results of that revival justified their several theories and practices. There was, therefore, evident need of a work, which should furnish the means of suitably appreciating both the good and the evil of that period of religious history.The next question was concerning its possibility. Could materials be found, for the construction of such a work? A slight investigation was sufficient to furnish an answer. 26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Excellent retelling of the Great Awakening By Thomas George Riggle I have read a number of works on revivals and this revival in particular. This is the one book on the subject that I have gone back to time and again. It is both scholarly thorough and devotionally helpful. As I read of the changes in the lives in the villagers of New England I became more and more impressed with how true revivals are such awesome and precious things.This book is very helpful for our day as well. In describing the excesses of this revival (especially those that had to do with Davenport) and in the detailed accounts of unwanted side-phenomena, we see sad similarities to what has been experienced in some of our churches today. This book shows what a true revival looks like.The writing is sometimes a little stilted (the book was first published in 1842), but this is a minor price to pay for all of the good information it brings to the serious reader. I certainly recommend it.
7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. well worth the read By michael craig The period known as the Great Awakening (of which there were actually two) is a very interesting societal event in American history. What actually brought this about is--at least for me--still a mystery. I believe however the core of this religious revival was rooted in the attitude of many of church leaders of that era. Ministers like George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards insisted that to be a recognized member of the body of Christ one must exhibit genuine fruits of the Holy Spirit in one's life--or must be "born again". It was not enough to simply believe in something, one had to experience personal transformation. This standard has been watered down so much since then that being a professed Christian no longer means anything significant (as far as I am concerned). This book is a well-researched document based on the testimonies and dairies of the religious leaders who actually participated in the Great Awakening. For this reason it has great historical value. It is also very readable. I recommend it highly.
