It was the sixties. There was a war on. Men from many backgrounds found themselves side by side in the Marine Corps. On the surface, boot camp was the same for all of them, but it was still an experience with individual effects. The first part of this gripping novel is a no holds barred look at that training that turned civilian boys into United States Marines. Though they all wore the same uniform, after boot camp, their lives took many different paths. There was also an anti-war movement. This book follows the lives of four Marines, that for one reason or another became disillusioned with life in the Corp. They and those like them were known as "Shit Birds." You make like them or hate them as you follow their gripping stories to a surprising conclusion. If you are a young person contemplating joining this unique branch of the service, this book may just change your mind., If you did serve, you will find yourself and many of your comrades reflected in these pages. If you are a civilian, this book may just change how you feel about America's finest. If you are currently serving you will be able to relate in both a positive and negative way to this fictional account based on the real experiences of a veteran during those turbulent times of the Viet Nam War. Fast paced action keeps you wondering what the next day holds in store for these four "Shit Birds." Hate them or love them, you will never forget them.

Mike does a great job of explaining the bond between the handler and the dog. We were not allowed to bring our dogs home when we left Nam and I spent the last two days in country in my dog's (BRUNO) kennel. That was 40 years ago and I still think of Bruno. Thank you Mike for sharing, thank you for your service active and now supplying dogs to the military. The lives saved by these brave warriors is countless. The men who have served with them know what they mean to the "Team".

I've read several books about Navy Seals and several more on the topic of Military Working Dogs. This book is definitely a favorite as it merges the two. The book details the highly refined process of developing some of the best trained dogs in the world for dangerous, life-threatening missions. While it does focus more on the training and development of the Military Working Dogs than it does the training and development of Navy Seals, Mike Ritland goes into great detail discussing the relationship that these dogs and their handlers develop, while providing interesting, real-world stories along the way. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in Seals or MWDs.

The men of the 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry called him "Captain" and later, his subordinates in the 10th Kentucky Mounted Infantry called him "Colonel". Some of his enemies called him a "dangerous guerilla chieftain". Very late in the war, his regiment was re-designated as the 13th Kentucky Cavalry. When his Confederacy no longer existed, and there was no longer a need for his sword, he picked up his Bible and returned to his former life as a country preacher and community leader. This book contains specific details regarding Confederate Colonel Ben E. Caudill's 13th Kentucky Cavalry. It includes a complete roster of the men who rode with Caudill, historical accounts of their engagements with their enemy, and a collection of period and post-war photographs.

I purchases this book as well as a copy for my father because my great, great, grandfather served in the 13th Kentucky Cavalry. It has a lot of information that would be of interest to anyone looking for information on the 13th and the men who served in that unit. It is also a great tool for genealogists contain some quotes from various soldiers and in some cases physical descriptions of soldiers. In addition to good photographs of some but not all of the members, it has some good basic information of the various battles in which the 13th was involved.

Informative but lots of errors By Paul Downing I purchased the book because my great grandfather and two of his brothers along with several other relatives served in the 13th Kentucky Cavalry. After I received the book, I went the picture section and found a picture of my great grandfather; however, it had someone else’s name underneath it. I also found several other errors in the book including my great grandfather’s mother’s maiden name.

A federal prosecutor in Mississippi for over thirty years, John Hailman routinely worked with federal agents, lawyers, judges, and criminals of every type imaginable. Encouraged by the acclaim for his earlier book, From Midnight to Guntown, he has opened even more of the astonishing cases within the over thirty-five boxes full of trial stories he carried into retirement.

Hailman gathers colorful exploits of eccentric modern criminals from William Faulkner’s Mississippi, where savvy victims often outwit their criminal perpetrators. Characters range from rich but incompetent drug lords and nationwide gun-runners to bumbling Dixie Mafia kidnappers. The book ends with “Fancy Frauds” in which ingenious con men (and women) offer hilarious but surprisingly sophisticated “special deals” on tax-free gold mines in Mexico and bargain (but bogus) Viagra. Chapters include “Guns, Bombs, and Moonshine Whiskey,” “Drug Kingpins Have Troubles Too,” “Crime Victims Fight Back,” “Mere Theft,” and “Fancy Frauds.” Written to entertain and enlighten, these stories will delight any fan of the true crime genre and anyone who enjoys good writing and the skill of a master storyteller.

Purser John Hailman is truly a master storyteller, befitting a man who adopted Mississippi, a state known for its famous storytellers, as his own. After reading Midnight to Guntown, I looked forward to Return to Guntown and was not disappointed. As a prosecutor, Mr. Hailman came into contact with amazingly colorful characters, ranging from criminals to law enforcement and attorneys, and his writing skills bring them to life for the reader. The stories are many times hilarious, sometimes touching, extremely enlightening, and always entertaining.

Excerpt from Peter: Fisherman, Disciple, ApostlePeter comes nearer to us than any of his bother Apostles. We revere James, the brother of our Lord, for his austere saintliness. We strain our eyes in the effort to follow John to the serene heights, whither his eagle-wing bore him. But Peter is so human, so like ourselves in his downsittings and uprisings, so compassed with infirmity, that we are encouraged to hope that perhaps the Great Potter may be able to make something even of our common clay. When walking over his farmstead with a friend we came on a field, which on a former visit appeared to be choked with thistles. He had bought it at a cheap rate because of its derelict condition. But it had been carefully drained and enriched. Much care and science had been expended on it, and to my friend's surprise a rich crop of clover resulted. The long-buried seed had lain starved and hopeless in the soil till the rich culture had called it into evidence.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is OK but is not the best I have read on Peter By Kindle Customer This book is OK but is not the best I have read on Peter. I am teaching a Sunday school class on Peter so have read many book on the subject. This is a book that is easy to read but not very deep. It to a large extent, the religious philosophy of the author based on what little is known of the life of Peter. I guess this may be all we can expect since there are at least 25 yrs that completely blank in the life of Peter so biographies are hard to wright. There are several important times in the life of Peter such as the conflict with Paul in Antioch but this glossed over here but the authors own philosophy rather than the underlying causes of the conflict. Another point, well covered in other Peter books is the "Rock" incident. Books by Catholic authors spend a lot of time on this of course. It is under discussed here. This book is ok but not great RAG

Peter, the servant, the fisherman, the apostle, the man that like any of us could reach the peak and finds the valley almost at the same time. The flaw Peter but the great Peter. . But most importantly Jesus all the way...

The final chapters brought tears to my eyes because you almost come to know the team first hand in each mission only to read about their deaths in the last patrol; it is numbing. It is with gratitude to know that there are those who become warriors for love of country, to endure hardships and to look death in the face to sustain loyalty to their comrades and the legend of the Corps. Thank you Doc and Force Recon Marines.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This Book should become a Movie!!! By A Customer A friend of mine turned me on to Major "Doc" Norton's books about the Marine Corps, and I must agree, this Major can tell a great story! I served in the Marine Corps for 22 years and had just one tour in Vietnam. No one else can "bring in home" like this guy can. You feel as though you are out on patrol with Doc and his recon team in 3rd Force Recon Co. The best part is that he writes a sequel about his time in 1st Force Recon Company. If Spielburg had half a brain he'd make Norton's books come alive on sreen. It would be the Vietnam version of Saving Private Ryan. If readers are interesetd in "credibility" than here is a story of heroic young men in combat. Truth is better than fiction and this book proves it. Any Marines I know would be proud to have guys like Norton and his teammates, Bishop, Silva, Keaveney and Furhman, in their team. Where do guys like these come from? The are the legends of the Corps. A GREAT Book! Go out a buy it. That's an order!
