John Jacob Astor, Eli Whitney, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Rockefeller -- read about the Americans who built the greatest economy in the world and saved the planet. They were not robber barons but people who gave better goods and better prices. In 15 years, Rockefeller drove down the price of kerosene by two-thirds. The money they earned they used for the public good through philanthropic works that live today. "Exceptional Americans 2, The Capitalists" is a tribute to them.

Learn What It Costs To Strike It Rich By Richard Let veteran newsman and editor, Don Surber, introduce you to a thoroughly entertaining collection of Exceptional Americans. Volume Two focuses on the Capitalists who shaped our nation's development through their drive to succeed, enriching themselves and our society. Each featured personality has their story told in an engaging way that personalizes history without embellishment. Having read the first volume of Exceptional Americans as well as many of the individual vignettes that make up this collection I can recommend this book to readers of all ages. Probably my favorite part of reading these stories is learning how much struggle and effort goes into being successful. America is truly heir to Greatness. One Exceptional American at a time.

He proves by example that you don't have to be a king, a general, nor an explorer to have a significant impact on the world. In fact, the Americans listed here have probably had more impact on more lives than any of the people discussed in most history books. Although his book gives 80 vignettes of exceptional Americans, the greatest tribute is to the freedom and free market culture of America, for that is what allows all of these people to succeed. This same culture allows many many more to succeed in more mundane lives, for it truly allows for "liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This book should be read to all children to counter academia's description of them as "robber barons," and to counter the pernicious meme that the wealthy became that way by stealing from the less fortunate. Thanks, Don, for an inspiring history lesson.

The Creators of Wealth who made America Great By paul s damus,md This is the second book on "Exceptional Americans" by former newspaper man and conservative political blogger Don Surber. Many of its characters are well known, like Edison and Ford. But, as in his first book, most are not. Yet, without these largely unheralded men and women it is hard to imagine America or even the world as it is today. The characters themselves are well drawn and perhaps more immediate than those in the previous book, being closer to us in time and influence on our daily lives. In his choice of subject and descriptive prose, Surber has upped his own game and produced more of that product for which he is so respected among those who have kept up with him, deep insight into a moral tale expressed with almost poetic brevity. This book is also important today because it carries within it the elation of success these people achieved, not by deception and cruelty or luck, as is the common propaganda meme of many who profess to hate the word "profit" while in reality being totally dependent on it, but by hard work and above all, perseverance against great odds. That American ideal is found repeatedly in these short pages, all of which are not only fun to read, but often produce a sense of humility and gratitude for the country that created it.
