1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gem of a history of Clan MacKinnon and the Jacobite Rising of 1745 By John McLachlan McKinnon "The End of an Old Song" is a pleasure to read. Extremely well written in plain English, well set out, nicely paced, readily accessible, a measured sequence and easy to follow. It left me with the impression of what a monstrous folly the whole 1745 Jacobite campaign was and I was particularly struck by the gentle and precise matter of fact manner in which the author introduced documentation and handled decisions made by the Council of Chiefs. I found his discussion and passing references to people like the principal Grants and other Highlanders who cooperated with the Crown, in particular the MacDonald’s and MacLeod’s of Skye very measured. No mention of how the latter two were threatened by Forbes over their illegal deportation of clansmen. Gerald McKinnon does not reinvent a war to fight rights and wrongs again but simply state the actions undertaken by the main parties. I found it remarkable that the author kept his focus strictly on the MacKinnon’s and saved readers the horror of the Culloden battlefield. Only passing reference is made to George the Butcher’s orders “Give no quarter!” The author deserves praise for restraint and avoiding all but the most necessary shock and horror.This history makes a unique contribution to a single clans engagement with the Jacobite cause and will surely appeal to those with a special interest in MacKinnon history. It also gives the general reader with an interest in the period a reliable account of the 1745 uprising, a matter that has not been well served by the "potted" histories which appear in the ubiquitous clan tartan books that are often so poorly researched. Gerald McKinnon demonstrates for us that real history is much more fascinating when it draws on original documents from the period and he handles this information so lightly and with such grace that this text will survive for a long time to come as a real gem in the genre of clan histories

Wonderfully informative By Carl M Johengen As a descendent of Clan MacKinnon, I have found this book extremely informative - full of a remarkable amount of detail, persons and places. Kudos to the author for the substantial amount of research involved.
