About the Author Matt Johnson is an American bureaucrat. And like most, his road through life is winding. From a small Iowa town on the banks of the Mississippi, through dilapidated punk rock clubs across America, to the world's largest low-rise office building in Washington DC. Matt grew up hungry to make a change, desperate for individuality, and always thinking big thoughts. And he wanted more from life than what he found in his government cubicle. So he wrote a book about America.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a really special book, I loved it! By Sara Burns I love reading about other peoples lives. This book is unique in that there are chapters about various people's lives and chapters about the author's life. Best of both worlds in my book! I loved the book from page one. It made me feel pumped and better about life. And there are moments that made me feel a lot, like when the author admitted to a stranger that he was lonely. It's hard to write a one of a kind books these days. I feel like this one is most definitely one of kind - I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Some essays are historical while others are personal to the author. The book is divided into 4 sections, American Life, American Dreams, American Work, and American Death. American Life includes essays entitled Why I traded my Toyota Prius for a 1987 Cadillac, and You Can't Get a Girlfriend Listening to the Smiths on Repeat. Each tells a story and ends with the lesson learned from the experience. The next section has stories of the men and women who weren't afraid to dream big to make a life for themselves. Some succeeded, some failed, but there's a lesson to be learned from each of them. The third section includes stories about working in America, of finding purpose in work, and the author's stories from working for the government. The final section is about death and the perspectives that it brings upon reflection. One especially good line from the essay, The Most Common Deathbed Regret- "May we find our dreams before our deathbeds."American Hearts is a fast read that, while sad at times, is ultimately an optimistic view of Americans and encourages readers to dream big, live passionately,and to never stop fighting for our beliefs.
