The story of Mesquite, Texas, is a story of an east Dallas County settlement that became first a depot town on the Texas & Pacific Railroad, then a Boomtown USA suburban city. Recently, and not alone among other aging American Southwest suburbs, it has become an urban center facing cultural, social, and educational challenges, as well as economic decline.

About the Author Author Art Greenhaw is a fifth-generation Mesquite resident who coauthored the definitive Mesquite history book, A Stake in the Prairie. He is a Grammy Award-winning and eight-time Grammy Award-nominated producer-arranger-musician. He was schooled at Black Elementary, Agnew Junior High, and Mesquite High School, where he graduated with highest honors. His family's Mesquite mercantile business was the recipient of Baylor University's Family Business of the Year Award. He has seen both the best of Mesquite times (as chronicled by this book's photographs) and the worst of Mesquite times and is optimistic that his home town can once again become a shining city on the hill that personifies the dreams of truth, rugged individualism, old values, and the traditional American Way.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. And We Remember "The Way We Were" By Lon McElroy I've read several of the History Press and Arcadia series books, and this is the best. Glowing with the author's obvious affection for his hometown, what makes this book rise so above the norm is this book's ability to point to challenges and to offer "hope" in the form of old values, a very different Mesquite when generations of families stayed in the town, a very different Mesquite when home-owned banks were prospering, when beautiful new homes were rising, when voters turned out for local elections. As a person with some family members still in Mesquite, we all ask ourselves just when did the current urban-cheap apartment mess become so apparent in Mesquite, and what city council members and mayors and outside builders are to blame? And who let the parade of main street u.s.a., and the 1990s and 2000s focus on main street, who all let this pass Mesquite, Texas by? Who let the dogs out? Regardless of whether or not Mesquite, Texas can ever rebound and become great again, this book sure does inspire with past days of glory, with past Americana and Texana charm. The author and the photo collection do a wonderful job of hitting the key areas of town life and growth, "Commerce and Private Enterprise" and "Schools and City" and "Culture-arts-faith-flag". Who that weren't there at the time would ever think that Mesquite would give birth to a major folk music festival that would be a little Newport folk festival? Who would know that old downtown Mesquite dates back at least to the 1890s? Who remembers the international destination in Mesquite called World of Animals? Who knows about Big Town Mall, king of its day, and Town East Mall, later king of its day? The photos here are incredibly rich and storytelling, especially the mid-century jewels from 1950s-1960s which a lot of Arcadia-History Press series don't focus on, but which set the whole stage for suburban prosperity and the baby boomers. This is a five-star book in every aspect, this will join that most indispensable of all Mesquite books, the book (along with this one) that belongs on every Texana collector's and lover's shelf, A Stake In The Prairie, and move over now for Mesquite:Images of America.

A Keepsake That Everyone in the Family Will Want to Read Again and Again By Terry Reid The author did a terrific job of providing a rich assortment of photos that presents the history of his town on a personal level that readers can identify with and appreciate. Utilizing a treasure chest of photos and charming vignettes, the book tells the history of a Texas town that became a city member of the DFW Metroplex. For those who grew up in DFW, we fondly remember many of the special places pictured in the book including Big Town Mall, The World of Animals, and Sanger Harris, that are no more. The book focuses on leaders in business and commerce, religion and education, and includes some great old photographs of the 1800s, American veterans, women of influence, typical kids of all ages, and the stores of yesteryear. A fun way to teach children about local history and culture, it's also a wonderful trip down memory lane for a visit with past generations that deserve to be remembered and recognized for their contributions. You'll enjoy reading it over and over for years to come.
