Exceptional story of Heile Salassia, Emperor of Ethiopia By Steve VN The author was kind to Heile Salassie, while also showing how the emperor was reluctant to let go of some power to save his nation. Because the author was of a highly place family heritage, and he had personal experiences in the Emperor's court, he was perhaps the best one to write this. I live in Ethiopia for several years, and my wife and I were there during the 1974 Marxist coup.

It displays the humanity of Haile Selassie the First and the favor that HE recieves from our wonderful Creator. Very informative book, with facts and opinions but that we can all take somethings from. Nevertheless, I rejoice because Haile Selassie the First has restored my pride. Pg. 204

But this was never the plan when I started running and if you had asked me about meditation five years ago, my response would have mirrored so many other people’s; in suggesting meditation is nothing more than a waste of time, an excuse to sit still that my busy life did not give me the luxury to partake in. But boy was I wrong! After a heavy running schedule at college, as a 'semi-serious' runner, I picked up a knee injury that side-lined me and ultimately meant not running at all for a very long time. I had been so obsessed with the time splits that I had forgotten to pay attention to my body and how it was responding to the increased workload. Years passed with nothing more than the occasional light run. The more time passed, the more I wanted to run again. The problem was that every time I tried, the years of muscle atrophy and overeating meant that even one mile was HARD. Sometimes I didn’t even make it a mile before I convinced myself that “tomorrow will be a better day for this, I didn’t get enough sleep last night”. I made all kinds of excuses for why I wasn’t running, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t get past those all too familiar walls we make for ourselves. I was being challenged and my head just wasn’t in to it anymore. I had lost my love for running. A friend of mine convinced me to speak to his Yoga instructor about Mindful Running. I was willing to listen, but I wasn’t about to pay for some meaningless claims about not-thinking while running. The instructor explained the entire idea to me and by the end I was a little bit intrigued, enough to be willing to try it. I signed up to a two month plan and the rest is history! I’ve managed to run marathons, avoid injury and drastically improve my life with the lessons in this book. I hope you also find similar inspiration. This book is about what I’d learned during those few months. Everything you need to know about mindful running as I now refer to it. I can now say that meditation and running go together better than peanut butter and jelly. By the end of my two month challenge, not only was I running again, I was actually enjoying it. I looked forward to my next run the second I was done with my current one. I learned to run in the moment, enjoying every step I took whilst also aligning these steps with future goals.

But all that has changed! This book taught me how to prepare mindfully, pay special attention to how I run, it made me more aware of things that I seldom just take for granted. I never thought that running can be so calming!! Now i feel more relaxed and at peace when running. This book made me look forward to my daily trips to the park. Excellent work! Thank you!!

It provides tips on how to run mindfully and clearly demonstrates that it's possible to incorporate meditation into whatever you're doing, whether working, sitting, eating, walking and running but focuses its content on meditation and mindful running. The best part of this book that I like is the 8-stage mindful running program that you can follow on a daily basis that makes tremendous effect to your overall health and wellness.

By Daniela I love running, but i had never think about breathing during my exercise. I took it as "automatically process" and now i know, that it was bad for me. After reading this book about Running Mindfully i am aimed with a bulletproof instruction how to use my breath wisely and get from running even more. After few exercises with my new knowledge from this book i am feeling more powerful, peaceful minded and motivated. Thanks to the Brett for the great book.

51 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Well documented history of the Plantagenet dynasty By Carole P. Roman Insightful and interesting book about the Plantagenet family. Desmond Seward writes a comprehensive history of the volatile clan who ruled England for hundreds of years. Well researched, this is history at its finest, coloring in the outlines of larger than life personalities but giving them realistic depth. He throughly describes each king, his wife, and children, delving into relationships, debunking myths with thoughtful and documented facts. He describes each leader with unvarnished honesty, and manages to leave the reader with an understanding of each of the quirks of their personalities. This is not a one dimensional cardboard representation, but well fleshed out recounting of each individual. In a few decisive paragraphs, he is able to give a definitive idea of each king, whether he is a madman or a quiet family man. A pleasure to read, with descriptive prose, he manages to paint a vibrant depiction of the medieval world, describing coronations, political climates, alliances and lastly a true picture of the life and times of thirteen different kings from one dynasty that shaped a country.

Leidy I've always been interested in the Plantagenets, and since this book follows the thread from beginning to end, it puts a perspective on the line. Whether they actually believed in the Melusina myth, or just used it to justify some of their actions, it makes a good read. Even if they believed it, their personalities and talents or shortcomings varied. I was disappointed that John of Gaunt was still getting a bad rap, his intense loyalty to his father and brother Edward, and even that little brat Richard II, getting short shrift. There are a couple of obvious errors (proofreader perhaps) about Richard III. His scoliosis pared his height by two inches, not a foot, and his wife died during the appearance of a comet, not an eclipse. Overall, I really liked it.

It certainly made me want to read more about them and get some in depth information on their lives.Desmond Seward’s writing is easy to understand and it’s surprising how much I learned in the few pages he gives to each monarch. It really does leave you begging for more.I found his research well documented and up to date. When you get to Richard III, he already has the autopsy report from where the bones were dug up this year. Some people were upset on his treatment of Richard III but I believe it really is the most recent data and therefore cannot be denied on it’s accuracy.My favorites in the Plantagenet family have always been Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitane and Henry V of Agincourt fame. He did their lives justice and made me want to read my books again and look up some of the ones I haven’t read yet.The book has several illustrations in the middle of it and also copious notes and references in the back of the book.I loved Mr. Seward’s style and will definitely look for more of his works in the future. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves British history or even the Game of Thrones which Mr. Martin has said was based on the Plantagenets. You may be surprised in how much is truth in his fantasy.

For example chapter one - Germans invade Poland, British stops all trade with Germany after the Jews in Poland were round up according to this book. What about the British and France declaring war on Germany after they invaded Poland? Trade stopped at that point. Further in this chapter is written "His conquest was successful as most of Sweden and Norway was occupied by the Germans. ", Sweden occupied???? Later in this chapter " Germany faced a huge monetary loss and to top that the winter set in the Soviet Union claimed the lives of several German soldiers." , Several????Just of the few items that make this book hard to read and believe.

Sad to Report By Red Ryder This book appears to be written by someone who writes English as a second or third language, or translated by someone who faces the same language problems. Granted there is information re: the life and proclivities of Ms Grese; however, nothing is offered that could not be surmised by knowing she was a rising star of the SS. Horrible use of the English language with little information. Don't buy this book.

Hager What I thought was the beginning, preface, leading into more in-depth coverage ended up being the entire first half of the book. Much time was wasted in "what you will read in this chapter", "what will be covered shortly". Instead of events occurring in chronological order, all of a sudden and needlessly it would flash to the end then go back to detail before. (Execution described bluntly, to then go back and describe trial and execution in-depth). Typos and autocorrect galore.

Those heady days at the Naval Academy in Annapolis just four years earlier now seem so long ago. Here he is, lying face down in a muddy ditch on some remote and forsaken island in the Cua Dai River in Vietnam in the middle of the night. He has been blown off a boat, and is evading capture. Bullets hitting the river water near him as he desperately sought a bit of land, and now wizzing over his head keep him aware that his location is known to his tormentors. He assumes that he will momentarily be dead. He is exhausted, bleeding from wounds, and the mosquitoes seem plentiful enough to carry him away. He can hear the staccato voices of an enemy search party looking for him. He is nearly in tears, wondering if they will simply shoot him, drive a bayonet through his back, or worse, take him captive with years of torture and agony ahead. Within moments they were directly above him. As he holds his breath tightly, he cannot stop his heart from racing wildly. Can they possibly hear that?? He can now even smell them. This surely could be it.

This book recounts that night and the other 365 days that the author spent as a U.S. Navy advisor to the Vietnamese Navy Junk Force. Bob Andretta’s assignment in Vietnam turned out to be as dangerous, or even more so, than he had anticipated. For him, it was the best and the worst of experiences. It thrust him into the role more of a Marine than a naval officer. He had to scramble to try to make up for the fact that he really was not prepared or trained like a Marine, notwithstanding the six months at the advisors’ school. The combat experiences were astonishing. The violence and the danger were disconcerting. Throughout all those experiences, Bob grew to love the Vietnamese people and the activities he was able to undertake to help them. Looking back now, Bob has no idea why he was allowed to survive when so many other Americans did not come home to live out their lives. But he did, and this is the story of that most interesting, challenging, perplexing, terrifying, gratifying, life-changing year of his life.

About the Author

Robert Anthony Andretta was born in Brooklyn in 1942, but was raised in and around Washington, D.C. He is a 1960 graduate of St. John’s College High School in Washington, and he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1965. He has post-graduate degrees in International Relations from King’s College London and the University of Southern California, and a Juris Doctorate from the Catholic University of America in 1977.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Andretta served in the United States Navy until 1972. His duty assignments were on two guided missile destroyers, a one-year tour in Vietnam as an advisor/liaison officer to a Vietnamese Navy Junk Force base and squadron, and the staff of the Commander in Chief U.S. Navy Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR) London. Andretta’s most significant awards from his naval service include two Bronze Stars with Combat “V”, two Purple Hearts, a Navy Commendation with combat “V”, a Vietnamese Medal of Honor, and two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry medals.

After retiring from the Navy in 1972 due to combat-related disabilities, Andretta served on the presidential campaign staff of the late Senator George McGovern, followed by the next several years as a legislative aide for two congressmen, and later, a senator. After finishing law school and being admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia, Andretta engaged in private practice, and then was named the first Chief Hearing Examiner of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation.

In 1984 Bob accepted an appointment as an Administrative Judge in the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, followed by a similar appointment in the Small Business Administration. He qualified as a federal Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in 1989, and was appointed to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. While at HUD, Judge Andretta decided numerous cases involving housing discrimination, the debarment of contractors, mortgagees and mortgagors, and the imposition of civil penalties. Judge Andretta also conducted many hearings on behalf of the 9/11 Victims Compensation Board, before retiring from the bench in 2007.

Bob is married to the former Elizabeth Campbell Hain who has taught and served in two dean positions at Georgetown University for over 43 years. They raised two sons, the late David Forrest Andretta and James Russell Andretta. The family home is on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, since 1973.

It’s a war story with vivid, exciting accounts of ground and naval combat that make it a great addition to my collection of Vietnam War books. The reader will find descriptions of firefights in which the enemy is never seen, close combat in which Andretta killed two enemy soldiers at point blank range, effective use of air power to support ground operations, an encounter with a Bouncing Betty landmine, the sinking of a Swift Boat and Andretta’s subsequent narrow escape from capture, etc. But this book is different from others in my collection in that it addresses fascinating non-combat aspects of the author’s year in Viet Nam – American/Vietnamese cultural differences, life for non-combatants in a war zone, US and Vietcong military strategy and tactics, the US’s “hearts and minds” campaign, use of Agent Orange, racism in the US ranks, the shock of losing friends and colleagues in combat, etc. Andretta’s accounts of medical aid he rendered to Vietnamese civilians left this squeamish reader amazed, appalled and full of respect for Andretta who accomplished such things without medical training or supplies.Andretta was a happy warrior for most of his tour. However, as his year in country came to a close he began to have misgivings about the conduct of the war, US objectives and strategy, free fire zones, a lack of respect among the many US troops for their Vietnamese counterparts, support and medical care provided to veterans, etc. He states the reasons for his change of heart clearly.Andretta came home from the war with three Purple Hearts, a boundless compassion and affection for the Vietnamese people and the conviction that the war was wrong. That improbable combination makes Andretta’s book compelling reading. Two minor issues – I found Andretta’s self-deprecating sense of humor and his occasional practice of directly addressing the reader appealing but not everyone will. And I found the book’s unusually high number of typographical errors distracting. These are minor issues. This book is highly recommended.

A Classic War-time Saga of Daring and Resourcefulness By Dan Pence Brown Water Runs Red by Bob Andretta is a terrific narrative of his action-packed river patrol experiences with a compassionate view of the plight of the Vietnamese people. Having served a tour aboard a destroyer in the classical blue water navy, Andretta’s next tour, naval advisory duty in Vietnam, was as different as night is from day. Classical shipboard life offered three square meals per day, a hot shower, and a clean bunk. Advisory duty at a remote Vietnamese coastal group base promised nothing, not even a reliable source of safe drinking water. The one thing he could count on was that hostile automatic weapons fire could be expected anywhere along the river network that he and his Vietnamese companions were assigned to patrol in their slow, wooden junks. This book is filled with accounts of engagement with Viet Cong forces, many of which will leave the reader on the edge of his or her seat. In some cases, Andretta wonders if it is possible to get any lower to the ground, and in others he is just plain angry as he stands on the deck of a junk oblivious to the bullets winging past. On the lighter side, Andretta recounts his immersion in various facets of Vietnamese culture, including language, dress, diet, etiquette, religion, family life, childbirth, and hygiene. He depicts the satisfaction and fulfillment of advisory duty and the strong bond that developed between him and his Vietnamese counterpart, but he also lays bare the concerns, such as the vulnerability of the base to being overrun during the night with no avenue of escape, the challenge of getting safe drinking water, food, ammunition, supplies and spare parts, and the uncertainty whether you are trusted and kept fully informed by your Vietnamese counterpart. He conveys the importance of establishing relationships with other nearby Americans, such as USN swift boat drivers, USMC CAP teams, USMC artillery fire base personnel, US Army forward air controllers, US Army sector advisors, USN SEAL teams, and medical staff in Danang. He also describes his efforts to bring rudimentary medical care to the local villagers, especially with regard to the needs of women giving birth in primitive conditions, illustrating how much can be accomplished when working without chain-of-command authority or funding. He explains how peasants, who only wanted to be left alone to work their rice paddies, could be driven to support the Viet Cong because of insensitive or reckless, deadly actions by supposedly friendly US, South Vietnamese, or South Korean military forces. This book is a "must read" for anyone who served as an advisor to the South Vietnamese military, wants to gain a better understanding of what advisory life was like, or admires the daring and resourcefulness of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. By Physics dude There are now several excellent memoirs of the Vietnam War written by those who served in that ongoing conflict. This superb addition to that genre is perhaps the best of the best. The author exhibits amazing recall of an entire series of scenarios in which he found himself as an American advisor to the Vietnamese navy(aided by the fact that he wrote short essays on some of the events 15 years ago). The book is a highly satisfying blend of stories beginning with his arrival (for which he has received no practical training) being essentially dumped into neck-deep water off the base to which he was being sent) to dramatic battle scenes from which he barely escapes. He finds precious little administrative support and has to learn how to cope with the South Vietnamese who may, or may not, be all on the U.S. side and the weather and incoming fire in the middle of nearly every night. However, what I enjoyed most was Andretta's keen insight into the Vietnamese culture and his interaction with the civilians in the villages and hamlets surrounding his remote base. His wit comes through on every page (he refers to one of his superior officers as "Colonel Starch"). There are numerous photos with captions throughout the book to assist the reader in imagining the locales and people with which he is operating (can you picture what a "hooch" looks like? Bottom line: This book fills an important niche in our ability to understand this contentious, and undeclared, war and the personnel who ended up in a desperate fight for survival. Winning was never an option. After reading this book, you will understand why. You will have a greater appreciation of everyone who fought there on both sides. Brown Water Runs Red is far more informative than any textbook on the Vietnam War, and a lot more enjoyable. Read this book!!!

History Making History Again By june green I just purchased and finished reading Professor Brenda Stevenson's book "The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins: Justice, Gender, and the Origins of The LA Riots". I had almost forgotten about the murder of Latasha Harlins until the murder of Trayvon Martin and the Trial of George Zimmerman. I was glued to the television listening and saying to myself, "where have I heard a trial presented like this before" "These words and Zimmerman's lawyer's approach to the case sounded so familiar", but at the moment I could not put my finger on where I had I had hear this type of trial before. Several days after the verdict was announced I received an email alert about Professor Stevenson's book, as soon as I received it in the mail and started reading it, I almost fainted from the realization of how these two case where similar including the verdicts. Professor Stevenson did an excellent job of giving details about what happened on March 16, 1991, Latasha family background, even her own mother had been killed and the individual was given a lessor sentence, but what I found most profound about her book was her ability to present all three women, the Judge who gave Soon Ja Du no jail time, Soon Ja Du family history and background, and Latasha Harlins who the Judge explained that if "Latasha had lived she would tried her for assault"! This book dealt with how females operate in the Justice System, something we don't always get a view of, how privileges, power and "who you know" plays a big part in who get to decide who lives or dies, who stays or goes, or who goes to jail and who does not, and how from a gender perspective this has a impact on how justice is administered. It also made me evaluate how the Zimmerman trial came about and the role women played in the verdict that was rendered. I am sure that People of California vs. Du was the first case on point that Zimmerman's lawyers used and almost word for word! Thank you Professor Stevenson for a well thought out and research book about an almost forgotten young Black female. I recommend this book to anyone who do not know Latasha Harlins story because it is a mirror image of the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman murder and verdict.

I cannot recommend this book enough By KTBoyd The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins is a full scale investigation of the death, trial, and sociopolitical repercussions of fifteen-year-old, African American Latasha Harlins’ assassination at the hands of Korean shopkeeper, Soon Ja Du. Stevenson pays special attention to the cultural background and influences that not only brought together Harlins, Du, and the Jewish Judge, Joyce Karlin, but uses them to explain why these factors governed their decisions and behavior. In order to do so, she uses census and immigration records, (auto)biographies, and private interviews to tell a broader story of the cultural hardships and social adjustment patterns that each family experienced. Beyond the histories of these women in particular, the author weaves together the histories of the intermediate families, community members, and the political, religious, and legal parties that were involved—heavily compiled from interviews and a diverse array of national and local newspaper articles. Further, Stevenson dissected a complete collection of the trial records to bring the readers back into the courtroom to see the events unfold as they actually occurred, as well as to identify some of the shortcomings in the legal arguments, evidence, and decision-making processes that lead to a lenient sentence for Du—and ultimately the discontent that incited the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Essentially, while Karlin and the defense attorneys argued that race and racism played no part in Du’s actions, Stevenson posits that these concepts had everything to do with how the verdict played out. Ultimately, the unjust verdict assigned for Latasha’s murder aggravated an already marginalized Black community, which led some to find a form of vigilante justice through the rebellion. While Contested Murder is a heavy-hearted and emotionally draining read, it is truly an example of a meticulously researched, objective account of history writing that takes special consideration of gender, race, culture, law, and politics. I cannot recommend this book enough!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Major Catalyst for the 1992 LA Riots Explained By Lionel S. Taylor This books gives an account of the murder and trial of a Korean shop keeper who shot a teenage girl in the back of the head after an altercation at a convenience store. It is one of the major events that led to the L.A Riots in 1992. The goes into the background of the three main people involved in the story and makes the point of showing that the encounters between these women both in the store on the day of the murder and in the courtroom. No one lives in a vacuum and this books attempts to put their interactions in the larger context of their experiences as women of different social status and racial groups as well as their positions in society. This was both the strongest and the weakest part of the book. I thought that it did help put the judges ruling in the sentencing in context as well as the reactions of the shop keeper. But it did seem to go into some unnecessary detail that was not relevant to the narrative. Overall I think that this is a very good book that is well written and it adds valuable background knowledge and context to the events of the LA Riot.
