*Includes pictures *Profiles Palmyra's origins, its relationship with Rome, its culture, and more *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built the temple of the Lord and his own palace, Solomon rebuilt the villages that Hiram[a] had given him, and settled Israelites in them. Solomon then went to Hamath Zobah and captured it. He also built up Tadmor in the desert and all the store cities he had built in Hamath.” – The Bible’s reference to Palmyra (as Tadmor) in II Chronicles 8 Recently, the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra has become a major source of news because the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has embarked on a campaign to destroy the temples and art of the pre-Islamic city. For many people throughout the world, ISIS’s campaign was the first time they heard about the city, but Palmyra’s importance and history can be traced back to well before the Roman Empire. In fact, Palmyra was unique among the many important cities of the ancient world because, like Carthage before it, it was a city that was also a culture. Palmyrene culture, from the arts to religion, borrowed from numerous other peoples throughout the ancient world to create a culture that was uniquely “Palmyrene”. Palmyra became a city like no other, and its culture shined bright for several centuries before it was finally extinguished. The people of Palmyra truly developed a vibrant culture that eventually placed the city among some of the greatest of the ancient world. Palmyra’s influential position in world history was largely due to its economic prowess, which was achieved not through conquest or exploration but through its position as the preeminent trading center in the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern regions. Donkey and camel caravans brought precious commodities from both the west and east through the gates of Palmyra, which eventually resulted in the city becoming an oasis of wealth in the middle of the Syrian desert. For hundreds of years, Palmyra’s wealth was a testament to its greatness, and its leaders displayed their political acumen by playing the middleman between the powerful Roman and Parthian Empires. As a result, the Palmyrenes built an eclectic culture that was as sophisticated as any of their contemporaries, but eventually the leadership of Palmyra overestimated their power and the greatness of their city quickly came crumbling down. Ancient Palmyra: The History and Legacy of One of Antiquity’s Greatest Cities looks at the influential Semitic settlement that flourished for thousands of years. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Palmyra like never before, in no time at all.

The only color and the only good photograph is on the cover. The type is about a third the size of a normal book, the photographs are all bad reproductions in black and white, grainy and very unsatisfying to look at. I felt that I could do much better going on line to find information. When I read a book, I like to enjoy the process. This one is hard to look at. Just wonder if the other reviewers are friends of the people who publish this or have even looked at it.

Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Patrick have completed the first compendium of African Americans depicted on U.S. Postage stamp from 1940 to 2015. ( Dr. Sullivan started collecting stamps as a child, which encouraged him to become an educator. He was inspired by the work of Booker T, Washington, George Washington Carver, and W. E . B. Du Bois.) The extraordinary and innumerable achievements of African Americans have shaped the story of America by the roles they have played and continue to bestow in the development of this country and the world. Their achievements have enriched all aspects of American society. While African Americans' contributions are often missing from the pages of history, their immense achievements are found in art, music, theatre, invention, military service, education, architecture, literature, science, business, diplomacy, journalism, civil rights, law, sports, scientific discovery, exploration, medicine, agriculture, politics, cinema, and many other areas. A narrative is presented for each individual honored on a stamp, the issue date and the significant social, economic, educational, and cultural roles each individual played in the development of America as the foremost country in the world. Additional achievers are highlighted under each biography whose achievements are stamped in history. The mission of this book is to introduce youth and others to comprehend and apply the ability to overcome obstacles, persist, pursue excellence and follow their dreams through a thirst for education. Dr. George Washington Carver once wrote, "Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom." Through education, our youth can continue the sterling contributions of the gifted African American men and women highlighted in this book. It also encourages individuals to consider stamp collecting as a hobby. Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Patrick believe this book is an important addition to your family's home library and a valuable reference and educational tool in schools throughout the nation.

While I was growing up, she always purchased stamps from the Black Heritage series for me and talked to me about the history of the person featured on the stamp. Upon hearing about this book, I thought it would be the perfect birthday gift for her! She absolutely loved it! Once I saw the book, I knew I would also have to get one for my home library. It contains over 500 pages of substantive information on the persons and events depicted on the stamps and does a very good job putting things into context for the reader by conveying what was going on at the time the person lived or event occurred. "African American Achievement Stamped Through History" also contains interesting lesser known historical facts. The material is well presented. My teenage son who is into history has also enjoyed the book. While this book would be great for a stamp collector, as a history buff, it also has my attention!

Excerpt from The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described: In Accordance With the Rubrics of Liturgical Books, the Decrees of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, the Code of Canon Law, and Approved AuthorsThe Catholic Church has surrounded all the acts of Divine Worship with a definite ceremonial to ensure on the one hand their due accomplishment, and on the other to safeguard the external reverence that should accompany them. She never employs ceremonial for the sake of the ceremony itself. Each separate rite has grown out of the twofold object that we have enunciated, even though in the process of time the origin, and the history of the development, of such rite may long have been forgotten. The Church is the guardian of all these sacred rites. To her it belongs to sanction a further development of them, to curtail such as may have become purposeless, or to impose new conditions heretofore uncalled for. Thus there has grown up a great body of legislation, controlled and regulated by two of the Roman Congregations, those of the Rites and of Ceremonial. Numberless commentators have written on the history of the ceremonies, while many others have treated them from the purely practical point of view.A "Ceremonial" in the latter sense calls for frequent revision if it is to be thoroughly in accord with the most recent legislation of the Holy See. Thus even the pages of the present work, as they issue from the press, call for modification in accordance with the new "Codex Iuris Canonici."For a long time past the Clergy in England have been without a Manual of Ceremonies, in their own tongue, possessing any claim to accuracy or completeness. They have been obliged to fall back upon excellent Latin or French treatises which often do not take account of local circumstances, and are in many cases almost useless to the devoted laymen upon whose zealous help the proper carrying out of our liturgical functions so greatly depends. This pressing want has now been fully supplied by the learned compiler of this manual of "The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite," and by the publishers who present his work in such satisfactory form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has long been out of print. Alternatives include finding an old edition online (anywhere from $50 to $200), or buying the edition recently updated by Dom Alcuin Reid ($55). This edition is a photocopy of the 1920 edition and is sold for an unbelievably low price of $11. Anyone connected with the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (priests, servers, sacristans, musicians) needs this indispensable book.

I have a rather aged copy of the original version of this book in my library, and hoped the Kindle edition would give me a working copy that I could easily refer to on my iPhone. Instead, I found it to be a partial and confused version-- I don't know who did the scanning and copying, but it's abundantly clear that they didn't check their work afterwards. I don't know if this copy is salvable, or if they should just start over.

Read Ebook P-51/F-6 Mustangs with the USAAF - European Theater of Operations (SMI Library), by Tomasz Szlagor

The North American P-51 Mustang powered by the British-designed Rolls-Royce Merlin/Packard engine was, quite simply, the best long-range escort fighter of the World War Two era. Entering service in November 1943, it curtailed prohibitive losses suffered by the heavy bombers of the US Eight Army Air Force which carried out the strategic daylight bombing campaign against the Third Reich. In the European Theater of Operations the USAAF also deployed Mustangs, with great success, as free-ranging strafers, fighter-bombers, scouts and reconnaissance aircraft. Eventually, it was the P-51 that broke the backbone of the Luftwaffe.REVIEWS excellent color profiles of specific tanks, and with a note in both English and Polish naming the unit and when/where the tank was used. Very much a book for scale modelers looking to get specific details right for their models, and at good value for money too.Military Modeling

Napoleon was the hero of his age, a man who helped France become, briefly, a hugely impressive European power. In 1814, he was imprisoned on Elba, planning an escape and plotting his course of action once he had done so. From the time he landed back in France to his loss at Waterloo, one hundred days elapsed. Scholar Alan Schom, an expert in the history of the Napoleonic era, outlines the key personalities and events of those hundred days in 1815. Napoleon is a far cry from the heroic leader of the time before he was imprisoned in Elba, attempting to gather forces and convince his old friends to help him once again. Despite the difficulties he faced from his irresponsible brothers, and acting in opposition to the statesman Talleyrand, Napoleon was only a whisker away from a famous triumph, and only eventually defeated by the mobilised force of the Allies. It was the Duke of Wellington and Blücher who defeated Napoleon, who was prepared to take on England, Austria, Prussia and Russia. The book includes a brilliant account of the manoeuvres at Waterloo, and is a fantastic tale of daring that is a useful book exactly 200 years on from the 100 days. ‘Undoubtedly the best account of this episode in English’ — Richard Holmes, The Times Literary Supplement ‘Alan Schom has written a racy account, backed by copious detail and an abundance of quotations...a good read’ — Michael Carver, Sunday Telegraph ‘A brisk, pacey account of the Hundred Days, written in a fluent and engaging manner...There are excellent sketches of Fouché, Talleyrand and Carnot and a most able analysis of the background...as well as fascinating material on espionage and intelligence’ — Frank McLynn in the Literary Review ‘A riveting narrative of events...a sparkling portrait gallery of the personalities who shaped those events’ — Russell F. Weigely, author of The Age of Battles Alan Schom was a professor of French and European history before retiring to write full-time. He is the author of Emile Zola: A Biography and Trafalgar. One Hundred Days was nominated for the 1992 Pulitzer Prize and for the 1992 US National Book Award. Alan Schom was a professor of French and European history before retiring to write full-time. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Should have stuck to Elba By Betsy The actual battle of Waterloo takes up only a small part of this book. Most of it is concerned with Napoleon's return to France from Elba and the effort to set up a new government. After the battle, there is short but succinct summary about Napoleon's fate, and that of those who had flocked to his standard. It's an interesting book; but it's difficult to feel much empathy for a man who head kept his country at war for so many years, and then didn't know when to quit.
