*Includes pictures *Chronicles the history of Ephesus and profiles its most famous buildings *Includes footnotes, online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “We shall never know what magnificence is, until this imperial city is laid bare to the sun.” - Mark Twain “I have set eyes on the wall of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots, and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus, and the hanging gardens, and the colossus of the Sun, and the huge labour of the high pyramids, and the vast tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the house of Artemis that mounted to the clouds, those other marvels lost their brilliancy, and I said, ‘Lo, apart from Olympus, the Sun never looked on aught so grand.’" - Antipater Although it is no longer quite as well remembered as it was thousands of years ago, one of the most important cities in the ancient world was Ephesus, a city that dates back nearly 3,000 years and can lay claim to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Moreover, while Sparta and Athens were often the centers of power in ancient Greece, Ephesus, located in present-day Turkey on the coast of Ionia, was an instrumental part of the Ionian League, which wielded power for a substantial period of time before the Classical Era. Thanks to its strategic location, Ephesus was an important city no matter who was in control of the region. In fact, while many of its most famous buildings were completed by 500 BCE, the city flourished after it became part of Rome’s domains, and the Romans respected the culture so much that they continued letting Ephesus use original coins. In turn, as the Western Roman Empire dissolved and the Eastern Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire maintained control in the area, Ephesus became an important religious center. In addition to a shrine inspired by the Virgin Mary, Ephesus was mentioned repeatedly in the Bible, including in the New Testament’s Revelations, and St. Paul even wrote some of the epistles in Ephesus. Ironically, and unfortunately, it was Ephesus’ role as an important place for early Christians that ensured the final destruction of its most famous feature: the Temple of Artemis. One of the oldest of the Wonders, construction began under King Croesus around 541 BCE, and it was constructed of marble in place of a previous structure that had been destroyed by a flood. The 3rd century Hellenic African scholar Callimachus of Cyrene believed the older structure had been built by the Amazons, but the original Temple of Artemis actually dated back to the late Greek Bronze Age around 1000 BCE. It may have been the first columned temple of its kind, but the site was not considered a Wonder of the World until after Croesus' version was built. A lot of information about the history of the Temple of Artemis remains unknown. It was built three times in all before its final destruction by the Goths in 262 CE, but the site's history thereafter is unclear before its rediscovery in 1869. It may have been repaired after the 3rd century CE, but this did not prevent it from being pillaged for building materials to construct Christian buildings in Constantinople a couple of centuries later. Early Christians resented the temple because of its cult and following, and stories in the New Testament survive of early saints praying to exorcise it, causing physical destruction, or being forbidden from entering the city due to citizens' fears of damage to the temple. These tales may reflect real-life instances of attempted arson or vandalism. Ancient Ephesus: The History and Legacy of One of Antiquity’s Greatest Cities looks at the influential city and the way it flourished for centuries. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Ephesus like never before.

Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia, was as brilliant as he was formidable. An early proponent of African unity and independence, Haile Selassie, who claimed to be a descendant of King Solomon, fought with the Allies against the Axis powers during World War II and was a messianic figure for the Jamaican Rastafarians. Written by Asfa-Wossen Asserate, Haile Selassie’s grandnephew, this is the first major biography on this final “king of kings.”Asserate introduces Haile Selassie as a reformer and an autocrat whose personal history—with all of its upheavals, promises, and horrors—reflects in many ways the history of the twentieth century itself. Chosen as Time’s “Man of the Year” in 1936 for resisting Mussolini’s invasion of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie was celebrated by many as the anti-colonialist “father of Africa.” But the final years of his empire saw turmoil and revolution, and he was ultimately overthrown and assassinated in a communist coup.Asserate, who spent his childhood and adolescence in Ethiopia before fleeing the revolution of 1974, knew Haile Selassie personally and gained intimate insights into life at the imperial court. Using his own personal experiences and painstaking research in family and public archives, Asserate has achieved a colorful and even-handed portrait of the emperor and his tumultuous reign.

King of Kings: The Triumph and Tragedy of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, by Asfa-Wossen Asserate

Review “A multifaceted picture of the so-called Father of Africa.” (Publishers Weekly)“A thorough and in-depth view of this larger-than-life figure. . . . Intertwines history, geography, politics, religion, and human interest to form a fascinating narration that covers much of the landscape of the twentieth century.”   (Foreword Reviews)“A tautly written, remarkably even-handed account of successful autocracy.”  (Spectator)“Haile Selassie is one of the most bizarre and misunderstood figures in 20th-century history, alternately worshipped and mocked, idolised and marginalised. This magnificent biography by the German-Ethiopian historian Asfa-Wossen Asserate (a distant relation of Selassie), and translated by Peter Lewis, is diligently researched and fair-minded; he is at last accorded a proper dignity.”   (Guardian)“This rather splendid book . . . can best be described as a sober and rational assessment of the extremely long and complex life of the most eminent African ruler of the 20th century.” (Literary Review)“The value of Asfa-Wossen Asserate’s biography is that it is an insider’s account. . . . Asserate provides a clear-sighted, dispassionate appraisal of the Emperor’s life.” (Times Literary Supplement)“Provides an authoritative, insider’s perspective and a refreshingly balanced look at this fascinating international figure who was the global face of Ethiopia for most of the 20th century. . . . King of Kings: Triumph and Tragedy of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is full of captivating details that only an insider could share; it is written with great poise and warmth for the enigmatic leader while at the same time cognizant of the swelling unhappiness and criticism the Emperor faced from his own people impatient with the pace of change.” (Tadias Magazine)“This moving and commanding work of literature, a perspective from inside the subject’s world and yet with full recognition of the world which surrounded it, is a litany of lessons, and a signal reminder of the human components of leadership.”   (Defense & Foreign Affairs Special Analysis)"The impressive, dazzling and complex personality of Haile Selassie, King of Kings and Conquering Lion, is conveyed in this biographical portrait by Asfa-Wossen Asserate, his great-nephew." (New African)“A superior biography.” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, on the German edition)"This is a superb, magnificent and totally gripping biography." (Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of The Romanovs)"Today, after centuries of oppression, a billion Africans are finally winning back the substance of their freedom but it is proving a long, vexed and sometimes violent fight. Asfa-Wossen Asserate’s masterful, insider’s account of Haile Selassie, the African emperor who led Ethiopia’s struggle against colonial fascism only to deny liberty to his people, stands as inspiration and warning to an entire continent." (Alex Perry, author of The Rift: A New Africa Breaks Free)

Exceptional story of Heile Salassia, Emperor of Ethiopia By Steve VN The author was kind to Heile Salassie, while also showing how the emperor was reluctant to let go of some power to save his nation. Because the author was of a highly place family heritage, and he had personal experiences in the Emperor's court, he was perhaps the best one to write this. I live in Ethiopia for several years, and my wife and I were there during the 1974 Marxist coup.

It displays the humanity of Haile Selassie the First and the favor that HE recieves from our wonderful Creator. Very informative book, with facts and opinions but that we can all take somethings from. Nevertheless, I rejoice because Haile Selassie the First has restored my pride. Pg. 204

The author's inside view adds anecdotal evidence based on personal conversations with Haile Selassie, those of his inner circle and those who had come into direct contact with him, that help to paint a thoroughly convincing picture of the mystery that the late emperor often was to those who have studied him.

Caught up in global chaos, the navies of World War II had to fight campaigns that rarely matched prewar planning. Each country found itself adapting its fleet compositions, ship designs, personnel training, and weaponry to ever-changing circumstances and ever-fluctuating resources-with varying degrees of success.

An understanding of the successes and failures requires an uncompromising critique of the tools of war. Fleets of World War II pins down the warships' actual qualities, a nation-by-nation survey covering everything from the mightiest battlewagons to modest patrol craft. After fifteen years as a staple of naval research, Fleets of World War II now appears in this updated edition with expanded text and more than 150 photographs.

Praise for the first edition:

"With a substantial library of good books on the fighting ships of the last century and a half, I am glad to add Richard Worth's Fleets of World War II to my collection." -Frank Uhlig, Jr., U. S. Naval War College

"This one book contains a perfect distillation of facts, theory and application on almost any ship that saw use in World War II." -Wargamer.com

"Fleets of World War II probably represents the best single-volume comprehensive treatment of World War II warships available today." -William J. Jurens, Warship International

Running Mindfully - How to Meditate While Running for Your Body, Mind and Soul

Includes FREE easy to follow 8 Stage Mindful Running Program Meditation has definitely saved running for me. But this was never the plan when I started running and if you had asked me about meditation five years ago, my response would have mirrored so many other people’s; in suggesting meditation is nothing more than a waste of time, an excuse to sit still that my busy life did not give me the luxury to partake in. But boy was I wrong! After a heavy running schedule at college, as a 'semi-serious' runner, I picked up a knee injury that side-lined me and ultimately meant not running at all for a very long time. I had been so obsessed with the time splits that I had forgotten to pay attention to my body and how it was responding to the increased workload. Years passed with nothing more than the occasional light run. The more time passed, the more I wanted to run again. The problem was that every time I tried, the years of muscle atrophy and overeating meant that even one mile was HARD. Sometimes I didn’t even make it a mile before I convinced myself that “tomorrow will be a better day for this, I didn’t get enough sleep last night”. I made all kinds of excuses for why I wasn’t running, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t get past those all too familiar walls we make for ourselves. I was being challenged and my head just wasn’t in to it anymore. I had lost my love for running. A friend of mine convinced me to speak to his Yoga instructor about Mindful Running. I was willing to listen, but I wasn’t about to pay for some meaningless claims about not-thinking while running. The instructor explained the entire idea to me and by the end I was a little bit intrigued, enough to be willing to try it. I signed up to a two month plan and the rest is history! I’ve managed to run marathons, avoid injury and drastically improve my life with the lessons in this book. I hope you also find similar inspiration. This book is about what I’d learned during those few months. Everything you need to know about mindful running as I now refer to it. I can now say that meditation and running go together better than peanut butter and jelly. By the end of my two month challenge, not only was I running again, I was actually enjoying it. I looked forward to my next run the second I was done with my current one. I learned to run in the moment, enjoying every step I took whilst also aligning these steps with future goals.

It provides tips on how to run mindfully and clearly demonstrates that it's possible to incorporate meditation into whatever you're doing, whether working, sitting, eating, walking and running but focuses its content on meditation and mindful running. The best part of this book that I like is the 8-stage mindful running program that you can follow on a daily basis that makes tremendous effect to your overall health and wellness.

A vivid and colorful history of the most dominant royal dynasty in English history, from Richard the Lionheart and Edward the Black Prince to Henry IV and Richard III

The Plantagenets reigned over England longer than any other family―from Henry II to Richard III. Four kings were murdered, two came close to being deposed, and the last―and most notorious, Richard III―was killed in a battle by rebels. Shakespeare wrote plays about six of them, further entrenching them in the national myth. Based on major contemporary sources and recent research, acclaimed historian Desmond Seward provides the first readable overview of the whole extraordinary dynasty, in one volume. 16 pages of B&W and color photographs

The Demon's Brood: A History of the Plantagenet Dynasty, by Desmond Seward

Review “Seward’s accomplishment is a history trustworthy both to entertain and to instruct. The most impressive aspect of the book is the way it wears its scholarship openly without thereby encumbering its popular style.” (Open Letters Monthly)“Seward reminds us of a style that has been all but lost in this thundering account of the Plantagenet family.” (Philippa Gregory, bestselling author of "The Other Boleyn Girl")“A tidy volume that briefly touches upon the highs and lows of the dynasty's 14 rulers. The result is a history that provides a fairly vivid overall picture of the kings themselves. The breadth of history covered and the author's succinct style will likely make this a satisfactory choice for casual readers seeking a full but accessible history of this dynasty.” (Library Journal)“The Tudors are popular these days, but the Plantagenets are gaining ground, as seen in the increasing number of books, movies, and television series based on the royal family that ruled England longer than any other of the sceptred isle's other dynasties. This is popular history at its most buoyant and informative.” (Booklist (starred review))“Historian Seward (The Last White Rose: The Secret Wars of the Tudors, 2014) again serves up a neat, clear view of an English dynasty―this time, the Plantagenets. The author deftly covers 300 years of English history and more than a dozen kings. Readers will delight in the efficient completeness of this narrative. Seward is a good author to turn to for ease in reading history; his writing style is quick, vibrant and delightfully pithy in its simplicity of phrase.” (Kirkus Reviews)“An entertaining and valuable exploration of the early Tudor period.” (The Literary Review ('The Last White Rose'))“The Last White Rose is history as it should be written: without hindsight or embellishment, but with erudition and a sense of immediacy that makes it a gripping and original read.” (Jessie Childs, author of Henry VIII's Last Victim (on 'The Last White Rose'))“Gripping and enthralling. No writer of fiction, however imaginative, could dream up more spellbinding plots than what actually happened, so skillfully recounted here.” (Robert Hutchinson, author of The Last Days of Henry VIII (on 'The Last White Rose'))“It is hard to imagine a historian more in command of his subject. The result is history as compelling as any novel.” (The Independent (on 'The First Bourbon'))“This is a splendidly and vividly written book.” (The Evening Standard (on 'A Brief History of the War of the Roses'))

About the Author Desmond Seward was born in Paris and educated at Cambridge. He is the author of Richard III, The Last White Rose, The Demon's Brood, and The Warrior King and the Invasion of France. He lives in England.

Desmond Seward writes a comprehensive history of the volatile clan who ruled England for hundreds of years. Well researched, this is history at its finest, coloring in the outlines of larger than life personalities but giving them realistic depth. He throughly describes each king, his wife, and children, delving into relationships, debunking myths with thoughtful and documented facts. He describes each leader with unvarnished honesty, and manages to leave the reader with an understanding of each of the quirks of their personalities. This is not a one dimensional cardboard representation, but well fleshed out recounting of each individual. In a few decisive paragraphs, he is able to give a definitive idea of each king, whether he is a madman or a quiet family man. A pleasure to read, with descriptive prose, he manages to paint a vibrant depiction of the medieval world, describing coronations, political climates, alliances and lastly a true picture of the life and times of thirteen different kings from one dynasty that shaped a country.

29 of 34 people found the following review helpful. it makes a good read. Even if they believed it By Kaye T. Leidy I've always been interested in the Plantagenets, and since this book follows the thread from beginning to end, it puts a perspective on the line. Whether they actually believed in the Melusina myth, or just used it to justify some of their actions, it makes a good read. Even if they believed it, their personalities and talents or shortcomings varied. I was disappointed that John of Gaunt was still getting a bad rap, his intense loyalty to his father and brother Edward, and even that little brat Richard II, getting short shrift. There are a couple of obvious errors (proofreader perhaps) about Richard III. His scoliosis pared his height by two inches, not a foot, and his wife died during the appearance of a comet, not an eclipse. Overall, I really liked it.

It certainly made me want to read more about them and get some in depth information on their lives.Desmond Seward’s writing is easy to understand and it’s surprising how much I learned in the few pages he gives to each monarch. It really does leave you begging for more.I found his research well documented and up to date. When you get to Richard III, he already has the autopsy report from where the bones were dug up this year. Some people were upset on his treatment of Richard III but I believe it really is the most recent data and therefore cannot be denied on it’s accuracy. My favorites in the Plantagenet family have always been Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitane and Henry V of Agincourt fame. He did their lives justice and made me want to read my books again and look up some of the ones I haven’t read yet.The book has several illustrations in the middle of it and also copious notes and references in the back of the book.I loved Mr. Seward’s style and will definitely look for more of his works in the future. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves British history or even the Game of Thrones which Mr. Martin has said was based on the Plantagenets. You may be surprised in how much is truth in his fantasy.

For example chapter one - Germans invade Poland, British stops all trade with Germany after the Jews in Poland were round up according to this book. What about the British and France declaring war on Germany after they invaded Poland? Trade stopped at that point. Further in this chapter is written "His conquest was successful as most of Sweden and Norway was occupied by the Germans. ", Sweden occupied???? Later in this chapter " Germany faced a huge monetary loss and to top that the winter set in the Soviet Union claimed the lives of several German soldiers." , Several????Just of the few items that make this book hard to read and believe.

Sad to Report By Red Ryder This book appears to be written by someone who writes English as a second or third language, or translated by someone who faces the same language problems. Granted there is information re: the life and proclivities of Ms Grese; however, nothing is offered that could not be surmised by knowing she was a rising star of the SS. Horrible use of the English language with little information. Don't buy this book.

Hager What I thought was the beginning, preface, leading into more in-depth coverage ended up being the entire first half of the book. Much time was wasted in "what you will read in this chapter", "what will be covered shortly". Instead of events occurring in chronological order, all of a sudden and needlessly it would flash to the end then go back to detail before. (Execution described bluntly, to then go back and describe trial and execution in-depth). Typos and autocorrect galore.

Those heady days at the Naval Academy in Annapolis just four years earlier now seem so long ago. Here he is, lying face down in a muddy ditch on some remote and forsaken island in the Cua Dai River in Vietnam in the middle of the night. He has been blown off a boat, and is evading capture. Bullets hitting the river water near him as he desperately sought a bit of land, and now wizzing over his head keep him aware that his location is known to his tormentors. He assumes that he will momentarily be dead. He is exhausted, bleeding from wounds, and the mosquitoes seem plentiful enough to carry him away. He can hear the staccato voices of an enemy search party looking for him. He is nearly in tears, wondering if they will simply shoot him, drive a bayonet through his back, or worse, take him captive with years of torture and agony ahead. Within moments they were directly above him. As he holds his breath tightly, he cannot stop his heart from racing wildly. Can they possibly hear that?? He can now even smell them. This surely could be it.

This book recounts that night and the other 365 days that the author spent as a U.S. Navy advisor to the Vietnamese Navy Junk Force. Bob Andretta’s assignment in Vietnam turned out to be as dangerous, or even more so, than he had anticipated. For him, it was the best and the worst of experiences. It thrust him into the role more of a Marine than a naval officer. He had to scramble to try to make up for the fact that he really was not prepared or trained like a Marine, notwithstanding the six months at the advisors’ school. The combat experiences were astonishing. The violence and the danger were disconcerting. Throughout all those experiences, Bob grew to love the Vietnamese people and the activities he was able to undertake to help them. Looking back now, Bob has no idea why he was allowed to survive when so many other Americans did not come home to live out their lives. But he did, and this is the story of that most interesting, challenging, perplexing, terrifying, gratifying, life-changing year of his life.

“Bob Andretta is that rare individual who combined aggressiveness as a warrior and empathy for the Vietnamese people. As an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy in a remote and dangerous outpost he pursued the war with innovation and vigor. As a human being, he found ways to minimize the impacts of the war on non-combatants. Both qualities frequently led him into dangerous situations. While the U.S. military command was counting bodies, Bob was winning hearts and minds through his self-initiated and compassionate aid to civilians.” Doug Burgess, Officer-in-Charge, U.S. Navy Swift Boat

“Bob Andretta has combined his good humor and exceptional writing capability to create one of the great memoirs of the Vietnam War. Coming off tours as a division officer on two guided missile destroyers, he was assigned to the Vietnamese Navy's junk force as an advisor. His vivid portrayals of the pace of life on his base, the sharply defined personalities surrounding him, and the stress of combat all bring his year “in country” to life. Full of insightful, sometimes humorous, and often searing observations, this is a book for anyone interested in a little known piece of the larger Vietnam conflict. Bob’s book is a must read!” James R. Stark, RADM, USN (Ret)

“Andretta has written a genuine thriller about his 1969 tour of duty in Vietnam. His descriptions of the events and dangers of warfare on the Cua Dai River are truly memorable. Andretta’s concern for his fellow combatants and the Vietnamese people is clearly evident.” Colonel (Ret) L. Nick Lacey, USAF

Brown Water Runs Red: My Year as an Advisor to the Vietnamese Navy Junk Force, by Bob Andretta

About the Author

Robert Anthony Andretta was born in Brooklyn in 1942, but was raised in and around Washington, D.C. He is a 1960 graduate of St. John’s College High School in Washington, and he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1965. He has post-graduate degrees in International Relations from King’s College London and the University of Southern California, and a Juris Doctorate from the Catholic University of America in 1977.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, Andretta served in the United States Navy until 1972. His duty assignments were on two guided missile destroyers, a one-year tour in Vietnam as an advisor/liaison officer to a Vietnamese Navy Junk Force base and squadron, and the staff of the Commander in Chief U.S. Navy Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR) London. Andretta’s most significant awards from his naval service include two Bronze Stars with Combat “V”, two Purple Hearts, a Navy Commendation with combat “V”, a Vietnamese Medal of Honor, and two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry medals.

After retiring from the Navy in 1972 due to combat-related disabilities, Andretta served on the presidential campaign staff of the late Senator George McGovern, followed by the next several years as a legislative aide for two congressmen, and later, a senator. After finishing law school and being admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia, Andretta engaged in private practice, and then was named the first Chief Hearing Examiner of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation.

In 1984 Bob accepted an appointment as an Administrative Judge in the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, followed by a similar appointment in the Small Business Administration. He qualified as a federal Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in 1989, and was appointed to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. While at HUD, Judge Andretta decided numerous cases involving housing discrimination, the debarment of contractors, mortgagees and mortgagors, and the imposition of civil penalties. Judge Andretta also conducted many hearings on behalf of the 9/11 Victims Compensation Board, before retiring from the bench in 2007.

Bob is married to the former Elizabeth Campbell Hain who has taught and served in two dean positions at Georgetown University for over 43 years. They raised two sons, the late David Forrest Andretta and James Russell Andretta. The family home is on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, since 1973.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An author with a different perspective By Doug B I loved this book. It’s a war story with vivid, exciting accounts of ground and naval combat that make it a great addition to my collection of Vietnam War books. The reader will find descriptions of firefights in which the enemy is never seen, close combat in which Andretta killed two enemy soldiers at point blank range, effective use of air power to support ground operations, an encounter with a Bouncing Betty landmine, the sinking of a Swift Boat and Andretta’s subsequent narrow escape from capture, etc. But this book is different from others in my collection in that it addresses fascinating non-combat aspects of the author’s year in Viet Nam – American/Vietnamese cultural differences, life for non-combatants in a war zone, US and Vietcong military strategy and tactics, the US’s “hearts and minds” campaign, use of Agent Orange, racism in the US ranks, the shock of losing friends and colleagues in combat, etc. Andretta’s accounts of medical aid he rendered to Vietnamese civilians left this squeamish reader amazed, appalled and full of respect for Andretta who accomplished such things without medical training or supplies.Andretta was a happy warrior for most of his tour. However, as his year in country came to a close he began to have misgivings about the conduct of the war, US objectives and strategy, free fire zones, a lack of respect among the many US troops for their Vietnamese counterparts, support and medical care provided to veterans, etc. He states the reasons for his change of heart clearly.Andretta came home from the war with three Purple Hearts, a boundless compassion and affection for the Vietnamese people and the conviction that the war was wrong. That improbable combination makes Andretta’s book compelling reading. Two minor issues – I found Andretta’s self-deprecating sense of humor and his occasional practice of directly addressing the reader appealing but not everyone will. And I found the book’s unusually high number of typographical errors distracting. These are minor issues. This book is highly recommended.

A Classic War-time Saga of Daring and Resourcefulness By Dan Pence Brown Water Runs Red by Bob Andretta is a terrific narrative of his action-packed river patrol experiences with a compassionate view of the plight of the Vietnamese people. Having served a tour aboard a destroyer in the classical blue water navy, Andretta’s next tour, naval advisory duty in Vietnam, was as different as night is from day. Classical shipboard life offered three square meals per day, a hot shower, and a clean bunk. Advisory duty at a remote Vietnamese coastal group base promised nothing, not even a reliable source of safe drinking water. The one thing he could count on was that hostile automatic weapons fire could be expected anywhere along the river network that he and his Vietnamese companions were assigned to patrol in their slow, wooden junks. This book is filled with accounts of engagement with Viet Cong forces, many of which will leave the reader on the edge of his or her seat. In some cases, Andretta wonders if it is possible to get any lower to the ground, and in others he is just plain angry as he stands on the deck of a junk oblivious to the bullets winging past. On the lighter side, Andretta recounts his immersion in various facets of Vietnamese culture, including language, dress, diet, etiquette, religion, family life, childbirth, and hygiene. He depicts the satisfaction and fulfillment of advisory duty and the strong bond that developed between him and his Vietnamese counterpart, but he also lays bare the concerns, such as the vulnerability of the base to being overrun during the night with no avenue of escape, the challenge of getting safe drinking water, food, ammunition, supplies and spare parts, and the uncertainty whether you are trusted and kept fully informed by your Vietnamese counterpart. He conveys the importance of establishing relationships with other nearby Americans, such as USN swift boat drivers, USMC CAP teams, USMC artillery fire base personnel, US Army forward air controllers, US Army sector advisors, USN SEAL teams, and medical staff in Danang. He also describes his efforts to bring rudimentary medical care to the local villagers, especially with regard to the needs of women giving birth in primitive conditions, illustrating how much can be accomplished when working without chain-of-command authority or funding. He explains how peasants, who only wanted to be left alone to work their rice paddies, could be driven to support the Viet Cong because of insensitive or reckless, deadly actions by supposedly friendly US, South Vietnamese, or South Korean military forces. This book is a "must read" for anyone who served as an advisor to the South Vietnamese military, wants to gain a better understanding of what advisory life was like, or admires the daring and resourcefulness of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. This 408-page book is written in a clear, approachable manner, and it includes a glossary to help explain location names and the unavoidable US Navy jargon and Vietnamese language terminology that is sprinkled throughout.Dan PenceFormer LT, USN and Senior Naval AdvisorCoastal Group 14, August 1970 - June 1971

By Physics dude There are now several excellent memoirs of the Vietnam War written by those who served in that ongoing conflict. This superb addition to that genre is perhaps the best of the best. The author exhibits amazing recall of an entire series of scenarios in which he found himself as an American advisor to the Vietnamese navy(aided by the fact that he wrote short essays on some of the events 15 years ago). The book is a highly satisfying blend of stories beginning with his arrival (for which he has received no practical training) being essentially dumped into neck-deep water off the base to which he was being sent) to dramatic battle scenes from which he barely escapes. He finds precious little administrative support and has to learn how to cope with the South Vietnamese who may, or may not, be all on the U.S. side and the weather and incoming fire in the middle of nearly every night. However, what I enjoyed most was Andretta's keen insight into the Vietnamese culture and his interaction with the civilians in the villages and hamlets surrounding his remote base. His wit comes through on every page (he refers to one of his superior officers as "Colonel Starch"). There are numerous photos with captions throughout the book to assist the reader in imagining the locales and people with which he is operating (can you picture what a "hooch" looks like? Bottom line: This book fills an important niche in our ability to understand this contentious, and undeclared, war and the personnel who ended up in a desperate fight for survival. Winning was never an option. After reading this book, you will understand why. You will have a greater appreciation of everyone who fought there on both sides. Brown Water Runs Red is far more informative than any textbook on the Vietnam War, and a lot more enjoyable. Read this book!!!
