I read it on Kindle and because of the way captions were done for pictures, it was at times confusing. It did, however, make me regret that I did not see the documentary. My family moved into Prestonsburg several years after the accident and even though I was a child at the time, I was aware of the deep sadness of the community.

Mr. Crisp spent a great deal of time explaining all that could be and the only possibility that fits as to the cause of this tragedy. Thank you. Very informative.

Set against the grand panorama of twentieth-century world events, it captures the remarkable life and spirit of climbing and medical visionary Hans Kraus (1905-1966). Kraus was taught English by James Joyce, escaped Nazi dominated Europe, and was JFK’s secret back specialist. A legendary rock climber known for hair-raising ascents on two continents, Kraus lived a life filled with tragedy and triumph, intense passion, verve, and a whole lot of guts, glory, and wit.One of the great unsung medical pioneers of the twentieth century, Kraus made headline news throughout the second half of the 1950s, was a guest of honor at Eisenhower’s White House, and was the subject of cover stories in major magazines throughout America, including Sports Illustrated. His pioneering work in muscles and fitness uncovered a shocking truth about a lack of fitness in American children, and his work curing back pain brought him into the Kennedy White House and inner circle of Camelot. Here now is the life of Hans Kraus, including the behind-the-scenes story of Kennedy’s crippling back problems, based on new documentation, including White House medical records and interviews with two Kennedy White House doctors.Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Kraus stressed the importance of core strength and flexibility above all else in preventing back pain, a fact that physicians, even today, can overlook. Kraus also blazed trails in the realm of trigger-point injections, an important aspect of contemporary treatment (though with different materials and methods nowadays). Yet, medical expertise is not a pre-requisite.A life-long non-climber, myself, I can similarly assure potential readers that expertise in this area is not a requirement, either. That said, just as Kraus could not have imagined his life without climbing, I cannot imagine this book without the author's (expert) recounting of his climbing career. As icing for this cake, the author provides an inside look at the Kennedy White House that few writers can match. And, in an ironic twist, she reveals how the President's dependence on his back brace might have had unimaginable unintended consequences. This book is a compelling read, a page-turner, in the manner of a great mystery novel. And - like a great mystery novel - it concludes with a final twist, a surprise ending that I am confident few readers will anticipate.

The back is the key By wogan First to those who are thinking of buying this book to read about the secrets and a tell all of what occurred between JFK and his doctor...this is not the book. There are about 59 pages dealing with Hans Kraus and his treatment of JFK - and to be a plot spoiler...what it basically says is that he worked with him on his back and by his K-W exercise methods brought JFK back to "vi-gah". There is one interesting postulation. Hans had told JFK to remove his back brace and he said he would in January 1964. Some `experts' say the 1st bullet that hit Kennedy would not have been fatal and he would have slumped over in the car, instead, the back brace held him and his head up rigid for the fatal shot. What the emphasis is on in the book is rock climbing and Hans' amazingly successful exercise methods that have cured many hopeless cases. The story begins in Austria pre WWI and we learn of Hans's family who were very well to do and were able to protect themselves and immigrate to America before WWII. They helped many and those that stayed behind died in concentration camps. It is good background on this historical time period. There are 2 pages of his K-W exercise tests, by which he judged fitness and reached the conclusion that American children were in need of much help in this area. His theories that muscles, if exercised can cure much of the pain that besets modern people today. The arguments are convincing and might give hope for those who suffer to research further into this - information is given. There is a very personal note by the author who was also cured of long term pain by Haus and was asked by him to write his biography and soon became his friend. She was writing it at his death in 1996 and has now published this finished work.It is an interesting work on the medical profession and the sport of rock climbing and this man who combined all of it into his life.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating on many levels By J. Kutner I love this book. The story of Hans Kraus is amazing and Schwartz tells it well. There is not a whole lot about JFK but that didn't bother me at all. The Kraus story is a piece of rock climbing history with a very human element. But it's also a story of fitness and exercise in America. Reading about Kraus' ideas makes me both thankful that something was done and angry that kids are still so out of shape! There are many other compelling aspects of this book. For example the story of the Kraus family during, before and after both World Wars is very unique. We read so much about the big events of the wars that we forget about the personal struggles of a small family in some corner of Europe. This is now one of my favorite WWII books as well as one of my favorite rock climbing books. Finally, this book is inspiring. Every time I put it down I wanted go outside and hike, run or climb.

Due partly to the Chinese scholar class’ disdain for all things physically demanding, there were few literate warriors to preserve the martial techniques of antiquity in ‘songs’. This, compounded with constant upheaval, and the passing of time have left us with very few extant historical texts on Chinese sword such as ‘Fundamentals of the Wudang Sword Method’. This makes accurately translating such writings quite the daunting task.Fortunately, we now have this work from one such ‘literate warrior’. While there are translations of sword manuals, very few are by those who have ‘walked the walk’. Rodell Laoshi’s teachings and influence can be seen the world over and is arguably responsible for the renaissance of historical Chinese sword combat training. Rarely does a martial author surface that possesses such a comprehensive understanding of the actual techniques presented in a classical work prior to translating it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Social upheaval, sophisticated arts, and why swords are relevant By Amazon Customer The author/translator, Scott M. Rodell, is a present-day expert on the usage and history of traditional Chinese swords and other related arms, as well as the full martial curriculum of Yang Taijiquan (Tai Chi). Many students seek him out specifically for this expertise and he regularly tours internationally to teach sword-work and Yang Taijiquan seminars. Comprehensive traditional martial arts schools of any kind are uncommon today—especially such schools teaching Taijiquan. Specifically within the Yang lineages of Taijiquan, the number of world-wide schools with authentic lineage with a full-contact and valid martial system are exceedingly rare.An even more dire situation confronts traditional, authentic Chinese sword knowledge. If Taijiquan is endangered of soon disappearing as a properly maintained martial tradition, historical Chinese swordsmanship is already on its death-bed, perhaps to disappear forever in the coming generation. Hence Rodell’s significant role here as a living source on a subject nearly forgotten to modernity. Naturally this loss of sword experts has been compounded by recent generations left with no deep understanding of realistic swordplay dynamics, the often misunderstood context of the weapon's usage within Chinese and greater history, and (perhaps most dangerous of all) a chaotic, overwhelming modern information age without any enforced quality standards of knowledge. It's worth considering whether our potentially fractious oncoming era has analogous or parallel resonance with the turbulent socio-political backdrop of early 20th century China, where began the ambitious military career of sword master Li Jinglin. Li’s verses on Chinese swordsmanship study and development are the focus of Rodell's translation and commentary. There's poignancy here given sword's precarious historical preservation in both eras. The historical backdrop is fascinating, though it's the collaboration of his brisk sword verses in context with Scott M. Rodell's expanded commentary which adequately conveys Li's sometimes terse instructions across disparate time periods. It offers significant value for students of martial arts with internal work, by demonstrating how to re-apply serious internal development to further progress by sword training, and also ought to help in the modern lack of knowledge regarding sword arts. That this understanding is so rare to modern traditions ironically re-affirms why the symbol of the sword is enshrined romantically across our cultures, and why sword mastery has value in continued preservation: it fosters a sophistication of character and skill that ultimately can be used to temper violence. History's periods of violent upheaval directly reflect a popular loss of such insights and aspirations.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship By Sonu Singh This new book by Scott M. Rodell is a gold mine of insights into historical swordsmanship. Rodell's expert translations are based on over 30 years of practical sword experience. My favorite is the sequence of training, where he talks about the different steps required for solo practice first and and sword play second. This book does not contain specific sword techniques, I recommend also getting his other book, "Chinese Swordsmanship," which is an encyclopedia of techniques and forms for both the public and Michuan Taiji sword systems.

2 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Interesting take from different points of view By Fred Goodwin Review: Facing America's Team: Players Recall the Glory Years of the Dallas Cowboys by John McFarland (ed.)McFarland, John (ed.). Facing America's Team: Players Recall the Glory Years of the Dallas Cowboys. New York: Sports Publishing. 2015 228p.Hardback, 24.99 (list), ISBN 978-1-61321-807-5According to the dust jacket, eighty "noted Dallas foes" will share their experiences of playing against America's Team! That's a lot to pack into 228 pages. Included are Joe Theisman, Conrad Dobler, "and many others".I was expecting many short chapters covering each opponent. Instead, the book's sixteen chapters are organized around 24 of the Cowboy's all-time greats, like Bob Lilly, Rayfield Wright, Roger Staubach, Randy White, Tony Dorsett, and the Triplets. The author selected HOFers, ROH enshrinees, and some players from the five Super Bowl champs. All are worthy. Before I get into the specifics of this book, I should note that the idea of collecting viewpoints of opponents of the Dallas Cowboys and putting in book form is not a new idea. Bert Sugar’s classic, "I Hate the Dallas Cowboys: And Who Elected Them America's Team Anyway?" (1983) started it all, and it’s been done a couple of times since, with varying degrees of success. But on to the title at hand! The four Sections are organized by era: The Foundation, Roger's Team, The Triplets, and Overtime. So basically, the post-Roger and post-Triplet eras are ignored. For each chapter, the author provides a brief summary of that chapter's Cowboy, and then follows that with recollections of various opponents. The quality of the player recollections is uneven; Harold Jackson's recollections of playing against Lee Roy Jordan, for example, are just a couple of sentences. He basically says "Killer" was a great player.I think the best section of the book was no 4: Overtime. In it, the author collects miscellaneous quips, anecdotes and stories that are not tied to a specific Cowboy player, but rather are about the Cowboys in general, or are about life in the NFL in general. I won't give away any nuggets, but there are some real gems in the final section. There are two serious failings with the book: First and the most egregious error: there is no index! When I opened the book and saw how it was arranged, I immediately flipped to the back to find listings by opponent, but there are none. If you want to know what Conrad Dobler thought about playing against the Cowboys, you'll have to flip through the book until you find him. This is a major negative (if you know your Cowboys history, and can go to the appropriate era, that will narrow your search, e.g., I found Dobler in the Bob Lilly chapter).Second, and a somewhat lesser (although still serious) offense: the author lists no references. I get that much (most?) of the material was gathered by face-to-face interviews, but 100% of it? I doubt it. It would be nice to know which secondary sources (if any) the author relied upon. Isn't that the first thing we are taught when writing a term paper or any length of research? Finally, a word about the author himself: the dust jacket says McFarland has covered news and sports for the Associated Press, the Dallas Morning News, and other media. But it never says he actually covered the Cowboys. Obviously, you don't have to be a Cowboys beat reporter to write a book about the team. But it helps. Having that daily exposure brings a depth and nuance that can't be replicated by the occasional article writer. That depth and nuance is missing from this book. Maybe that’s why McFarland calls himself an "editor" instead of the "author".© Copyright Fred Goodwin, August 26, 2015americas_team@hotmail.com

It was the sixties. There was a war on. Men from many backgrounds found themselves side by side in the Marine Corps. On the surface, boot camp was the same for all of them, but it was still an experience with individual effects. The first part of this gripping novel is a no holds barred look at that training that turned civilian boys into United States Marines. Though they all wore the same uniform, after boot camp, their lives took many different paths. There was also an anti-war movement. This book follows the lives of four Marines, that for one reason or another became disillusioned with life in the Corp. They and those like them were known as "Shit Birds." You make like them or hate them as you follow their gripping stories to a surprising conclusion. If you are a young person contemplating joining this unique branch of the service, this book may just change your mind., If you did serve, you will find yourself and many of your comrades reflected in these pages. If you are a civilian, this book may just change how you feel about America's finest. If you are currently serving you will be able to relate in both a positive and negative way to this fictional account based on the real experiences of a veteran during those turbulent times of the Viet Nam War. Fast paced action keeps you wondering what the next day holds in store for these four "Shit Birds." Hate them or love them, you will never forget them.

Review

“After a stellar career in the Teams, Mike Ritland has gone on to train working K9's for some of the most elite units in the U.S. Special Operations community. These dogs are integrated into Special Operations at all levels of mission planning. They HALO parachute from high altitude, chase enemy squirters, and detect explosive booby traps, to name just a few tasks. If you want to learn about these amazing animals, the sacrifices they've made, and their effectiveness in combat, then read Navy SEAL K9 Warriors.” ―Brandon Webb, Former Navy SEAL, New York Times bestselling author of The Red Circle, and Editor-in-Chief SOFREP.com

Mike does a great job of explaining the bond between the handler and the dog. We were not allowed to bring our dogs home when we left Nam and I spent the last two days in country in my dog's (BRUNO) kennel. That was 40 years ago and I still think of Bruno. Thank you Mike for sharing, thank you for your service active and now supplying dogs to the military. The lives saved by these brave warriors is countless. The men who have served with them know what they mean to the "Team".

I've read several books about Navy Seals and several more on the topic of Military Working Dogs. This book is definitely a favorite as it merges the two. The book details the highly refined process of developing some of the best trained dogs in the world for dangerous, life-threatening missions. While it does focus more on the training and development of the Military Working Dogs than it does the training and development of Navy Seals, Mike Ritland goes into great detail discussing the relationship that these dogs and their handlers develop, while providing interesting, real-world stories along the way. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in Seals or MWDs.
