Rondo B B Me and Gerald Sinclair have created a milestone in the history of the Saint-Clair family, and have provided a roadmap for researchers of other families with ties to medieval England and Scotland. Their message is clear, get your heads out of the myths and legends and return to the facts. Then dig deep into the records to understand the context of the events that colored the world of those individuals back in time struggling to deal with their wider circumstances. Out of that will come a rare historical document that provides truth for future generations. And that is precisely what we in the Saint-Clair family now have.Father Richard Augustine Hay (1661 - 1736) had access to many papers of the Sinclair family of Roslin in the late 1680’s and recorded copious notes from them. As the source documents were later destroyed by fire, this was a bit of luck. Since then, only two other researchers added any further significant documents research to the subject - Thomas Sinclair and Rowland William Saint-Clair. Each of these last two researchers were writing at a time when such undertakings were clouded by sentiment and legend, making us modern researchers skeptical of some of their claims. Now our family benefits from Rondo and Gerry’s very unique approach. They focused on original source documents, of which there are more than you might think, and dutifully recorded the facts. They also used highly credible secondary sources like G.W.S. Barrow, Professor of Medieval History King’s College, University of Durham. This gives you a sense of how critical they were of their sources. But, importantly, Gerry and Rondo don’t just report the facts; they provide context and conclusions which make a great deal of sense as they are presented in a backdrop of historical facts. This is no dry recounting of the facts. I simply cannot put the book down and am on my 3rd reading. The result is a book that every member of the Sinclair / St Clair / Sinceler / Sinker family will proudly pass down to their ancestors. In this age of the Internet, we need to learn to ignore the fabulous, the copied and pasted, as well as the complete fantasy so we can learn the real truth.• If you are a member of the Saint-Clair family, buy this book. Pass it on to your descendants.• If you are researching an entirely different and unrelated family, buy this book. Study Rondo's and Gerry's methodology and apply it to your family. As a 11 year researcher of our family, and the director of the St. Clair Sinclair DNA Study, I can tell you that your descendants will thank you.

I can see why even now the relationship with England is wary. Every time I return to Scotland I become more and more aware of this. Gerald's book is a great history and tells it like it was! A good reader.

To fully appreciate it's merits it helps to have read a good bit of the other Sinclair histories that have been written over the years as far back as the Father Hay material written in what I refer to as "the Sinclair glory years". Those of us of a sceptical bent will have seen quite a few passages where your eye brows automatically go up as you read the words and there is little or no way to verify what you are being told.Gerry and Rondo's book is different. The backup info is quoted and identified and if you wish to check it out for yourself you can do so. Much has been gained by consistently sourcing charters for land grants and reviewing the list of witnesses to the grant. Who was there, what was their position and where were they in the pecking order of the times. It was info like this that enabled the writers to come up with where the Sinclair's of Rosslyn came from before they got the grant of land at Rosslyn. The William the Seemly story? Gone. No confirming data found to date to back it up.How did Henry Sinclair finagle getting the appointment as Earl of Orkney? He knew what he had to do and did it successfully and it's laid out for you to think about. The politics of 1379 were not a lot different from the politics of today. Is it an easy read? Not particularly as there is a lot of detail to go through that requires your attention. But if you are a Sinclair that is interested in what really happened in "The glory years" you will enjoy learning from this book and keeping it as a reference book of substantial merit.
