The Shawangunk Mountains?the Gunks?are renowned for stunning landscapes on and off the ridge in a region that has remained a favorite destination for visitors since the middle of the nineteenth century. While the mountain elevations are not high?nowhere exceeding 2240 feet?they present rugged topography with glistening grey-white escarpments, jumbled boulders at the base of cliffs, deep crevices, as well as precipitation-fed “sky lakes.” Arnold Guyot, the first Professor of Geology and Geography at Princeton University, remarked in 1887 that “Few spots on our continent unite so much beauty of scenery, both grand and lovely, within so small a compass, to be enjoyed with so much ease,” a sentiment echoed by many today. Three magnificent Victorian hotels were constructed in the northern Shawangunk Mountains in the decades after 1869, one situated along Lake Mohonk and two others on cliffs above Lake Minnewaska. Only the grand Mohonk Mountain House remains. Framing the Gunks are the valleys of the Rondout Creek and the Wallkill River where one finds New Paltz, which lays claim to being “one of the oldest towns in America” because of the stone houses aligned along Huguenot Street, as well as quaint hamlets like Gardiner, Rosendale, Accord, High Falls, and Marbletown.

Great photos, past and present, of a beautiful part of the world By Robert C Ross For anyone who loves hiking or climbing in the Gunks, this is a very interesting and colorful supplement to your maps and guide books. The book contains a large number of reproductions of postcards from the past printed on the same page as a scene taken recently, so that you can see the differences and the similarities.All illustrations are remarkably clear, including the reproductions of the postcards.For hikers, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference maps are essential: Shawangunk Trails.A marvelous hiking book now in its fifth edition over 20 years: A Rock With A View. Hiking, Biking and Skiing the Shawangunk MountainsScenes & Walks in the Northern Shawangunks by Jack Fagan -- although the trail descriptions cannot compare with Weinman's, Jack Fagan's delightful and magnificently illustrated book covers the foot trails and carriageways of Minnewaska, Mohonk and Sam's Point and demonstrates the joys to be found here from a different point of view.Robert C. Being a covered bridge enthusiast, I was especially excited to see historical information on three lost covered bridges and one surviving covered bridges along the Wallkill and Shawangunk Kill. These bridges would be long forgotten if not for the efforts of individuals dedicated to preserving their history. This book is now part of the permanent collection of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center.
