16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. More than meets the eye By M. Leavell A physician, myself, I was awed by how far ahead of his time Hans Kraus was. Kraus stressed the importance of core strength and flexibility above all else in preventing back pain, a fact that physicians, even today, can overlook. Kraus also blazed trails in the realm of trigger-point injections, an important aspect of contemporary treatment (though with different materials and methods nowadays). Yet, medical expertise is not a pre-requisite.A life-long non-climber, myself, I can similarly assure potential readers that expertise in this area is not a requirement, either. That said, just as Kraus could not have imagined his life without climbing, I cannot imagine this book without the author's (expert) recounting of his climbing career.As icing for this cake, the author provides an inside look at the Kennedy White House that few writers can match. And, in an ironic twist, she reveals how the President's dependence on his back brace might have had unimaginable unintended consequences.This book is a compelling read, a page-turner, in the manner of a great mystery novel. And - like a great mystery novel - it concludes with a final twist, a surprise ending that I am confident few readers will anticipate.

The back is the key By wogan First to those who are thinking of buying this book to read about the secrets and a tell all of what occurred between JFK and his doctor...this is not the book. There are about 59 pages dealing with Hans Kraus and his treatment of JFK - and to be a plot spoiler...what it basically says is that he worked with him on his back and by his K-W exercise methods brought JFK back to "vi-gah". There is one interesting postulation. Hans had told JFK to remove his back brace and he said he would in January 1964. Some `experts' say the 1st bullet that hit Kennedy would not have been fatal and he would have slumped over in the car, instead, the back brace held him and his head up rigid for the fatal shot.What the emphasis is on in the book is rock climbing and Hans' amazingly successful exercise methods that have cured many hopeless cases. The story begins in Austria pre WWI and we learn of Hans's family who were very well to do and were able to protect themselves and immigrate to America before WWII. They helped many and those that stayed behind died in concentration camps. It is good background on this historical time period.There are 2 pages of his K-W exercise tests, by which he judged fitness and reached the conclusion that American children were in need of much help in this area. His theories that muscles, if exercised can cure much of the pain that besets modern people today.The arguments are convincing and might give hope for those who suffer to research further into this - information is given.There is a very personal note by the author who was also cured of long term pain by Haus and was asked by him to write his biography and soon became his friend. She was writing it at his death in 1996 and has now published this finished work.It is an interesting work on the medical profession and the sport of rock climbing and this man who combined all of it into his life.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating on many levels By J. Kutner I love this book. The story of Hans Kraus is amazing and Schwartz tells it well. There is not a whole lot about JFK but that didn't bother me at all. The Kraus story is a piece of rock climbing history with a very human element. But it's also a story of fitness and exercise in America. Reading about Kraus' ideas makes me both thankful that something was done and angry that kids are still so out of shape!There are many other compelling aspects of this book. For example the story of the Kraus family during, before and after both World Wars is very unique. We read so much about the big events of the wars that we forget about the personal struggles of a small family in some corner of Europe. This is now one of my favorite WWII books as well as one of my favorite rock climbing books.Finally, this book is inspiring. Every time I put it down I wanted go outside and hike, run or climb.
